Starting full time at McKinsey in November. Curious to know what it’s like for fellow gender non-conforming folk, as well as non-binary and trans folks at the firm (or as consultants in general!) Are there any trans/non binary people at your firm/office location, regardless of your firm? Just trying to gauge what kind of world I’m stepping into.

Can’t speak for McKinsey, but can comment on the industry. I’m ex-ATK, and transgender. There are more of us than you think. I joined the firm when I was male-presenting and the firm was incredible in supporting me through my transition. I also had non-binary people to mentor me, making a very challenging period manageable. Clients can be awkward about it - I’ve had some who constantly misgendered me, dead named me, etc. Some project leaders would tell me to “not let it bother me” when I was affected, and others would immediately use the right pronouns/name, politely correcting the client without making it awkward for anyone. Feel free to DM me if you have specific questions. Being gender diverse in consulting is not as scary as it seems.

Congratulations and welcome to the Firm! Likely the same as for everyone else who starts :) initially it might feel a bit stressful till you get used to the work and communication style and build out a basic consulting toolset. However, everyone around you has a keen interest to help you be successful. Always remember that people don’t expect you to know everything day one - you got hired for your potential to develop as much as for your capabilities and personality. So don’t be too hard on yourself while developing your skillset and be yourself ;) Personally, I wouldn’t stress too much. If you are really keen to find out more, ask the recruiter to put you in contact with the global GLAM manager (LGBTQ+ network) who can link you up with other people of the community. People genuinely are there for each other regardless of tenure/role, leverage that :)

I want to be brave and confident but I am admittedly a bit scared of what I’ll have to deal with. It’s a tricky world we live in.

Have you tried to reach out to their LGBT group ahead of your start? Maybe they can put you in touch with someone. I’ll be honest, there’s not a single (out) gender non conforming person at my company of 2000 people, so I’m sure it can be isolating. But I’ve heard of a few working at McKinsey. I’m wishing you good luck for your start.

uplifting

Ask the recruiter to put you in touch with your local GLAM lead. It’s our LGBTIQ+ affinity group that will help and support you. I’m in Asia if you want to chat.

Parents are deciding between moving to WVirginia vs Virginia for retirement to be closer to us based in fairfax, va(ideally be at 1 hour driving distance). They currently in the mid west but WVirginia appeals to them because of low taxes, low cost of living. We are also poc so appreciate some diversity. What are some areas you would recommend both in Va and WV? What else should they consider prior to house hunting? Dad likes to garden/farm as well so looking for homes with large backyards. Tia!

I gave interview for Technical Manager in Wipro. JD was leaning heavily on architect side. The interview was boring, and the main focus was on team building. Can anyone help me understand, or share similar experience with Wipro if they had.
