Suggestions for how to handle a female boss who is awful to her female employees. She comes off as supporting women and loving diversity in the interview but as things get more stressful she becomes harder to work for. There is a clear division as our male coworkers are praised for the same things we are getting push back on. Additionally, this is a large company with a lot of opportunities and she's been here 20+ years. When I asked for mentorship to help me find the right position she told me

Unfortunately the reality is if she’s been there for 20+ years, she’s going to stay longer than you would. Going to HR will not solve anything. Do you have opportunity to move around in the company to a different department to not be managed by her? This would be my first look is how can you shift out of her realm internally (that’s what I did). The next step sadly will be looking outside of your org for a new job. She’s not going to change no matter what you do and the org is probably going to keep her longer than they’ll keep you.

What you can do now is just be polite and kind in the work realm— speak with her only when needed and start figuring out your exit strategy be it internal or moving companies. 😕

I appreciate your advice. Yes there are other positions/opportunities at the company that are outside her realm. I will have to work with HR to figure out where to go next. I actually love the company I work for and want to stay, I just don't want to stay in my current role and that was before she started acting like this. It's simply not a good fit for me, and I want to be a contributor to my company and team which I could do in a role that fits my skills and abilities.

You asked her for "mentorship" on how to leave her team and find other opportunities in the company and you're wondering why she's now cold to you? This seems to be the wrong approach and I'm completely unsurprised that backfired.

Have you spoken to HR? Sometimes they help sometimes they don't but if no one speaks up they can't get a pattern on this manager.

I hate that HR response for you. Okay I misread the "other roles" part of that write up, I get what you're saying is more looking for generalized mentorship and guidance.

I actually have preferred working for men most of my life and do find women bosses to be a bit competitive at times and I really try not to ever be that manager. It's just a weird thing but I have no conclusive reasoning as to why that happens but I think men see women less as competition so in a management situation it's less tense. Shouldn't be, but has been for me.

Cont... If I'm unhappy I should just leave. Now, the one day a week we're in the office she ignores me and it's incredibly uncomfortable.

My natural instinct is to assume rejection if I have conflict with a partner or don’t think my feelings are reciprocated. I’ll try to bring it up with them, but I’ll say “if you want to end this feel free” so it doesn’t hurt me (and they can say what they really mean instead of sugarcoating). Someone told me today that they just assume I’m not interested because I always seem to “run” but I’m not sure how to bring up problems/feelings otherwise. How do you approach these hard questions?

My previous manager would track us by hours daily, made a fuss everytime anything stretched and guilt us for that and the unplanned leave too unless it was COVID. Hinted him a lot of time, this is problematic but apparently he considered it "standard practice for agile".

Now 8/10 teammates have switched within < 1 year of project start (6-7 months with him) which tbh had good work in our opinion and even team was fun to work with even though none of us ever met in person.

So, the CDC removed the Covid guidelines. I’ve never had Covid. I’m afraid people will come into work not wearing a mask and be inconsiderate… ughhh so distracting and disgusting. I’m also at risk to develop complications. Not sure if I should talk to HR. Not even sure if I should ask for accommodations to continue being able to wfh at least most days of the week to reduce risk. Idkkkk 😩This is so unprecedented. I always wear my mask at work.
