Renting a car is the key. There are a lot of pros with tour busses - yes, it’s touristy, you’re in a group, etc. However, not worrying about logistics is cool and saves a lot of time, depends on where I’m going but sometimes I love a tour guide giving insights. If you’re staying anywhere for a few days and you have time, rent a car
We have this crazy invention in Europe, it's called public transportation 😂
I suggest a mix of public transport and tours. You can get around Europe super easy with the train system, and then book tours in the town you are in.
Where are you planning to go? You could do local tours once you’re at a location, or there are small group tours that’ll leverage a mix of public transportation / private transport to get you to a number of highlights without being on those huge tour buses where you’re there for 5 min and then off to the next stop
basically to hit the top 10-20 places over the next few yrs worth of PTO lol. Starting with a central to eastern Eu one as they’re cheaper.

If you do a bus tour, try to figure out the tour’s target audience. Most tour buses I see unloading tend to skew towards 60-80 year olds, with a lot of mobility issues. I love the planning aspect, and I have some obscure historical interests, so an organized tour just isn’t for me. There is also the lack of spontaneity with a tour, which would bother me a lot. Good luck with your next trip.
I liked planning a few times but it can end up taking longer than the vacation itself lol. I look at the bus like an overview and can potentially return if necessary. 1st time is hard as you don’t know if you’ll like a place.
Open ended would be cool but missed my shot at a gap year back then, we was poor.
