Can’t agree with CA1. There are plenty of times I don’t tip for pick up, but I do over half the time. Depends on how often I go to the place and how much I ordered and how hard it is to make. Nothing wrong with helping out service industry workers either, especially during this time. I usually tip about $1 per item for takeout, or a 5 spot if it’s a lot of stuff or expensive.

Always tip. These people live on tips. Even pickup you can do a little bit. Delivery more so. In the olden days a few bucks was good for delivery but times are tough! If you can afford it, tip generously. It will never be the wrong decision.

These people are risking their health and safety by going to work every day and as someone in the consulting field we all probably make more than the average median household income unless just leaving undergrad, you should be tipping 20% at minimum
Good point—during Covid I have been tipping 30% or 35% for the half dozen times I’ve gone to an outdoor restaurant with the wife. For takeout, I have tipped around 15% or a minimum of $5.

Everyone but A1 and PS1 is wrong. You absolutely should tip every single time. Take out, dinning in, delivery. These people are paid the same or very close to the same as the waitstaff. They are depending on tips to pay bills, buy meals, pay for services they may need such as childcare or car maintenance. Absolutely always tip no less than 20%. Every time.

You should tip for pick up. Having worked in restaurants, I’ve seen how hard the takeout teams work to organize and bag everything from dozens of orders coming in all at once. They’re also low paid like servers and rely on tips. Not saying this is the best system, but it is the system.
Generally speaking, whether I tip 15% or 50% wont make much of a difference to me in terms of money spent. But a 20-30% tip for a 18-24 year old can make a big difference. I actually enjoy dropping a 30% tip on there sometimes (both takeout and delivery) because I know how that used to make my whole night or week back when I was a server living on the generosity of strangers.
These comments are a little bit disturbing. If everyone on here thinks 20% should be the norm whether you dine in or take out, then businesses should simply build in 20% and then not expect any tips.
How about all you 20%ers out there go consult these industry managers/owners and make that happen. It will be better for everyone.

This is precisely the problem, there are no standards here. If the establishments just bake it into the price and pass it on to the employees, then problem solved! They wouldn’t have be dependent on the generosity of the customers and we wouldn’t have to decide- is it 10,15 or 20%.
A1 and PS1 you act like this hasn’t been done/doesn’t exist anywhere else.

If you are really consulting your clients based off of you “gut instinct” and not studies/examples/research, then you are doing it wrong. Hopefully you take this later piece to heart.

I worked at a restaurant during college and we had to pay out a percentage of everything sold under us, including if we took phone orders. Not sure if this is how every restaurant does it, but it is pretty common so I'd say throwing a little tip for takeout would make sense. Definitely a flawed system, but those who are employed by the restaurant don't necessarily have a choice in how they're paid, especially if they couldn't find any other employment.

I always tip for anything other than fast food. Even for shitty service, I still tip. Sometimes I tip fast food folks as well for great service. You never know what someone may be dealing with that affects them at work.
10% for takeout. 20% for delivery / dine-in.
Totally agree under normal times. In the Covid era I try to add another 5% to each of those amounts since I know we could all use an extra few bucks with the uncertainty of today.
I look at it as we're no longer tipping for the "service" experience but the premium availability & the people willing to take the risk. I still tip but to support the people who making it all possible.
