Does anyone else just not care that much about money anymore? I didn’t have much growing up but now that I have relatively more it’s not bringing me any more happiness. People talk about 401Ks, pay raises, promotions and all that but I couldn’t care any less.

Spoken like someone who has enough money to do what they want

like

I agree mck1. There comes a point at like ~150k base where you can afford a decent lifestyle and do what you want when you want. Anything above that is really diminishing returns. I have really come to this opinion through the pandemic and valuing what really matters

likesmart

I didn’t grow up with money either and I’m paying for it now with student debt. Everyone thinks I have it like that just because I went to a top school and work in consulting. It’s not that simple. I’ll be glad to take your money.

like

401k is not your now. It is your later. People who don’t plan accordingly for their future are selfish, as they are more likely to become a burden on someone.

So I get what your saying, but keep an eye on that 401k. If you don’t need the raise or the promotional increase, bonus. Take the extra, and put half away for later, and donate the rest to a meaningful charity.

Yeah I think I know what you mean. When I first landed a big job it was all exciting - hotels, restaurants, clothes, etc. Now a year or two later, just this weekend I was thinking of what I could blow some stacks on and literally nothing exciting came up...It seems I need to spend more and more to get the same kick. I used to get a kick out of just some rando $100-$500 stupid purchase, then I got into like $2-5K furniture or weekend vacations....now I want like 10K or like 50k to renovate the house and well its boring when you need to save up a bit for things.

But in terms of happiness - totally agree - I don’t get the same emotional rush. For happiness I’m looking at health, personal growth, and giving back as a source vs buying some stupid overpriced French wine. I’ve been thinking a lot about sustainability and how I might be able to help. It’s honestly more rewarding. Either that or sharing/helping others.

Money is shallow and it’s not going to full the void...

So why don't you give it all away?

like

Its a sideffect of a weaker dollar too.
There just isn't much need to work in today's society.
We give money away, or lend it at low rates, and then inflate our Portfolios.

We say 'oh you're lucky. you have enough money to do what you want'

So do a lot of suburbanites. They have much cheaper houses, they live more modest lives with lower incomes. But the vast majority of America has a roof over their heads, a steady income, and gets by.

Once you have that small lil house in the burb, and free education through HS for your kid, and a job that covers some healthcare for you and fam, what more do you really want to work for?

like

Personally, I want to work so I can retire quicker. And technically public school isn't free for everyone. Depending on where you live you're paying for it through taxes.

like

I’ve been feeling that way too but that’s probably also the pandemic talking (you have a job that hasn’t been affected by the pandemic so you’re financially secure, but you don’t have many of the “perks” you would normally enjoy with a higher salary so it doesn’t matter to you right now)

Seeing family and friends get cancer in their 40s and 50s.. you realize that working yourself to death at the expense of spending time with loved ones and experiences for more 💰 is not worth it. I’ll keep my low maintenance lifestyle, thanks.

You literally are experiencing in real time the established wisdom that researchers into this area have settled on. There exists an income point for most people in which the marginal increase of happiness associated with more wealth/income is negligible (or for some people actually declines).

So long as you’re able to avoid the aforementioned hedonic treadmill, you’re in a great place and can focus your efforts on other life priorities. Be grateful though, a lot of people never get to this point in their lives, either due to ever-increasing “needs” or flat out don’t make enough.

I have $20k in savings, I owe $6,000 to my 401k loan, that’s the only loan I got. I am debt free otherwise except for my house. Should I use my savings to pay off? Since people are talking about unemployment and being fired, I wanted to make sure I have enough, 👩🏾‍💻... What should I do? I initially took the loan to add to my home equity when I sell my house for a new house then covid hit.

Hey fishes, can someone tell me how the 80c bracket works, i know i can get exempt upto 1.5lakh under it, what i wanna know is does PF comes under it or not? For example if my yearly pf deduction is 20k and VPF is 10k so now will i still be able to show investment of 1.5lakh under 80c apart from PF and VPF or i'll be able to get exemption on only 1.2 lakh( 1.5lakh-30k= 1.2lakh)?

Thank you in advance!!

Hi guys, new to crypto currency space, which mobile app is best for trading these, any suggestions?

Can someone help me understand how backdoor Roth works in my situation?

I contribute the $19.5K max to a 401K each year. Would backdoor Roth be (A) the ability to roll $6K of that $19.5K into a Roth? or (B) an incremental $6K that I could contribute to a separate IRA then backdoor into a Roth?

Asked another way, does backdoor Roth allow me to actually contribute $25.5K each year, or does it just allow $6K of my $19.5K contribution to build in a Roth?

Thanks!

I am generally uncomfortable when I’m around my mother-in-law’s husband.

While he is overall a decent guy, his anger issues, yelling at his wife for the slightest issue, and insulting nature makes me uncomfortable and triggers my own anger due to his blatant disrespect for just about everyone around him.

My mother-in-law says he’s worked on things, but it’s been 10 years of this and I’m not sure I want such behavior around my wife and our kids since we’re trying to conceive soon (cont).

I have noticed that other minority bowls (based on ethnicity) often have posts about racism they faced and how they are lagging behind because they belong to a certain group. I don’t want to debate on that here. What I want to ask is that I have rarely seen such posts about racism in this bowl. Is it because we don’t face it as much as some of the other races do? Or is there just lesser awareness about reporting it? Or something else? Hoping for constructive discussion.
