I’m finding it harder to maintain work/life balance these days. I feel pressured to take on all work coming my way to prove my worth and reduce chances I’m laid off. This isn’t sustainable. Wwyd?

I have chronic health issues and I’m severely depressed. I can’t even get myself to work anymore. If I don’t quit, I’m in serious danger of being fired. I feel that I need to just quit and take time off to get better but feel that it will be a stain on my career. I’m a pretty junior lawyer. Any advice. I just can’t do any work at all and I’m my anxiety and depression is spiraling out of control. I see a therapist I try to cope and it’s not working.

Hey friends, I was laid off (due to COVID) from Accenture a month ago as an analyst. I had a pretty good network of SM, MD and managers that I talked to frequently before. However once I was laid off, I got depressed and haven’t reached out to any of them. I feel horrible but I’m trying to push myself out of my depression and make some positive changes. My fear is that at this point, I’m just a number and that they don’t care. It’s causing me anxiety and I’m telling myself it’s too late now.

I was placed on a PIP due to a project where the client didn’t like our work and from there I crushed the PIP and got off of it with no issues. Unfortunately, I was told my work was great and people gave great feedback but I still was placed on it anyway. I was terminated luckily with a 45 day severance package and honestly grateful to have finally been out of there and to a firm I like.

I read to the kids a book that ended with a line like, "If it was a good story, start all over."I told the kids I really only did that once in my life regarding a book about a teacher going to teach in Africa. In reality it was about a missionary. I hid the name of it and what it really was about. In other instances I've also explained the meaning of life is to love sacrificialy without telling them the source. I feel guilty hiding the Truth. How do you speak the Truth without being fired?

Since Florida is an at-will state, can an individual be fired for a lack of productivity in a physically demanding work environment (if that lack of productivity is due to a heart condition)?

For folks who are getting laid off, be open to 6 month to 1 year contractor jobs. Go for W2s if you can get it and assess 1099 taking your company’s Cobra. It is a good stop gap measure until things improve.
