that's a tough question - nice post
I’m going to argue that urban and suburban have a denotative meaning. We get that. But urban has a connotative meaning in education. In fashion. In literature. In music. We can’t forget that. When I say I read urban fiction I’m not saying I read books about NYC. When I go to a fashion show and it’s urban fashion it’s not just fashion people in a city wear. And when I say I teach at an urban school it’s not just that I teach in nyc, it’s who I teach in nyc.
From a Social studies prospective we teach the meaning of the word not the characteristics or stereotypes people put on them.
ex: urban: city, many people, high rise buildings, subway, bridges, traffic, etc.
rural: lower population, farmland, fields, forests
