Latham.

Thanks! Why’s that?

Latham and definitely not Goodwin.

Worked across Goodwin from Latham. Had enough rookie mistakes from Goodwin including bad version controls, miscommunications etc.literally broke my arm running redlines to make sure they are not messing up again and again

like

Do not under any circumstances go to Goodwin unless it’s your only option. It’s an awful place to be.

like

Latham or Orrick. Probably Latham

Hi. Picking up an old thread. You mention WSGR is an adversarial place with adversarial people. Can you elaborate?

like

Avoid Goodwin. They’re probably the most prone to layoffs of any firm.

like

Ali Ramadan was the London practice at Goodwin and he just left to Cooley with his two senior associates. WSGR is probably most active in London.

like

Goodwin or Latham

like

Goodwin sponsors and attends all the major life sciences industry events in the region. If you’re an ECVC/Corporate attorney with interest in the LS sector, it’s a good choice. If you want broader than LS, choose Latham

Thanks everyone, would also be helpful to understand why or why not each firm. Keen to understand the culture, platform and prospects at each.

Is WFH/remote work here to stay for freelancers? I’m in LA and considering a move to a much smaller market (Atlanta) but I’m worried about losing clients if I can’t physically go into the office (whenever that starts happening again).

At what salary point did you feel "content" if ever? At $90k, and I've always figured once I got to $200k I'd be "good" and chill out, thoughts on that?

I realized recently that I can turn my “super associate” persona at any time. I had it off during covid when my kids needed me and got a bad review. So now it’s back on. I’m responding to midnight emails (and daytime ones in under 20 minutes) and getting work done the same morning. I’m spending countless hours doing edits over edits. I actually don’t like super associate. Why do people live like this 24/7?!? 🤔

Can you name a firm (preferably NY office) that lets its associates work from a different country with no issues? The mid-size firm I’m currently at has been very flexible during covid but I’m looking to change firm (biglaw). Since my family is abroad I find it extremely valuable to be able to do this (I did this even before covid for a couple of weeks, twice a year). I’ve heard firms like Latham and Paul Weiss don’t allow it for tax reasons.

I just finished a big jury trial with a senior partner (SP). There were co-parties w/separate counsel. SP mentally checked out, to the point that co-counsel was asking what SP was doing/if SP was okay. I ended up handling most everything. SP did a few parts but went rogue and did things that were offensive/risky/bad for client. It became clear that SP is not performing like SP used to and may be a liability. Do I tell someone at my firm? Don’t want to offend SP or cause drama, but I’m concerned.

Has anyone moved away from NY and successfully resigned from the NY bar? What are the consequences if you just don’t pay? The requirements are insane to officially “resign” - draft a motion, pay a fee, send proof of service - I honestly do not know what this nonsense means, I’m not a litigator for a reason. Is there someone I can pay to do it? Should I just pay the $375 to stay active to avoid this nightmare?

What’s big law like in San Francisco? Anyone have any insights to firm cultures or billable targets?

Any insight on Brewer (either office, generally curious about the firm). I assume comp after year 1 is discretionary, rather than lock-step, given the size of the firm. Would appreciate happiness, horror stories, of whatever “firm culture” falls between the two. DM me if you don’t want to share publicly.

Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP Thinking of making a lateral move into big law, but not major office like NYC or Chicago. Work at a mid size regional law firm in Hartford, but billing big law hours (210-240/month) and getting paid %50 of market. Granted I’m in hartford. Do any big law firms with Hartford branches get paid top market? Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP

What does it mean when a partner gives associates, especially junior associates, origination credit? Practically, I don't think it makes a difference except maybe for bonuses, but I'm wondering if there's any deeper meaning than extending gratitude?

Litigators—how many different cases are you on?

Been feeling spread too thin lately but I don’t know whats typical. Curious what others do. And would you mind sharing whether you’re a junior, midlevel, partner, etc??

I realize sheer number of cases doesn’t tell the whole story… obviously you can be buried on one massive case. I’m finding it hard to jump back and forth between everything I have going on right now, though, but I don’t know if the answer is to just deal with it.

How did you give notice you were lateraling to people you like? Particularly if you haven't been there that long?

I'm lateraling to another firm because frankly I think the management of this one is terrible, but the people (and individual partners) I actually work with are awesome. I've only been here for about 18 months, so I imagine that short time frame will make it extra awkward 😬

Should I take more initiative? It’s my stub year and I’m getting worried. How many matters is typical for one associate to handle (BL lit)? I know it is group-specific, but just trying to get a general idea. I’m a 2nd year and I am the only associate staffed on about 30 cases-meaning I keep track of all deadlines, do all day to day assignments, keep on top of following up with client/OC, and all research/drafting. Partners handle deps/court but that is about it. Is this a normal case load to be responsible for as a jr? I being dramatic by thinking this is too much?
