Old dudes can get away with their eight strands of combover hair as professional.
That client should go kick rocks. You can't be expected to blowout your hair straight everyday.
This was something I was concerned about when I was a junior, but the more senior I’ve gotten, the more I’ve realized it really doesn’t matter. It’s relatedly hard to imagine a world where the client’s comment isn’t bigoted in some way (race, sex, religion, depending on circumstance). I’d raise this internally if your firm is serious about DEI issues.

I think you all are correct. I appreciate the input.

A CLIENT was upset about your appearance? That sounds absolutely insane to me
Stop feeding the patriarchy. Most human beings have curly hair. Wear yours with pride!

Senior associate here. I have long, wild curly brown hair. It’s not pretty tight curls or the kind of curls people pay for. My hair curls in a bunch of different patterns and sort of just does what it wants. I take care of it and it’s healthy, so that’s not the issue. Most of my colleagues don’t really know what my hair looks like as flat iron it when I wear it down (including my firm picture) or wear it up in a bun or clip. I’ve always felt like my hair wasn’t great, but also not really a problem.
I’m posting here today because a client mentioned I looked unprofessional last week on a call. I had my hair in a bun, but admittedly it was a little messy. I had a bunch of flyaways that hairspray and gel wasn’t touching, so I put on a plain black headband. I also had on makeup and a nice loungewear (the kind that looks fine on camera). The client had me turn my camera off almost immediately due to “connection issues”, and later told my partner that I can’t join calls “in my pajamas with my hair in a mess.” The partner was awesome about it and defended me (I would never join a video call in pajamas!), but passed the criticism along so I was aware of the client’s expectations. Regardless of whether she’s right or wrong, I’m glad she covered for me so I didn’t make a poor impression with her team. I’m also glad she said something, even if awkwardly through someone else. I’m sort of torn on the situation, though.
On one hand, I’m definitely going to step it up and focus on more professional looking tops for calls, and add some jewelry. I don’t think I can do any more on makeup. For my hair, I thought I could try wet tight buns and ordered some more professional looking headbands (just less casual looking) for days I really need to tame the beast.
On the other hand, I’m sort of hurt about it. I’m really self conscious about my hair. I can’t do anything to make it look different without damaging it. It seems unfair that I’m expected to chemically straighten my hair or heat style it for every day meetings, or put it up in a tight bun. I’ve heard several people say curls and other natural hairstyles aren’t professional during my career, but I’ve never been confronted directly until now.
I can’t decide whether I’m being sensitive and my hair was a bit too much that day, or whether I’m right in thinking these standards are unfair and outdated. Thoughts?

Oh, man my hair absolutely looked as put together as these women, if not better. I don’t brush my hair into a pony or bun, but I don’t seem to need to in order to get this look. My hair seems to lay pretty against my scalp with just a bit of finger brushing for anything not sitting well. When I said it might have looked a little messy, I meant the hair in the bun itself, but it definitely doesn’t look noticeably messier than these.
I’ll look into the headband brand you suggest, though. Mine was just a plain black one but maybe some trendier ones might send more of a “this is an intentionally put together look” message.

I’m legit shocked by the comments here and how united they are. Thank you all for the support and validation. I really appreciate it.
HELL YEAH OP 🔥
I have long, 2c/3a curly hair. I only blow it out for photos or interviews. But man, I feel you on this. Every time I wear my hair down I’m so anxious about it. I feel like I look young and unprofessional. With it up, since it frizzes a bit and curls out from the ponytail, I’m also a little self-conscious. But, as so many above have said, that’s natural. So, I wear my hair air-dryed and down. I use products to help the curls hold, but nothing else. I’ve never received any comment about it, and I’m so angry to hear that people here have!! Do we comment on their appearances or makeup-less faces? Why is it fair to ask curly-haired humans to make these concessions? Styling my hair takes no less than 1 hr, so I don’t. It’s clean, trimmed, and healthy. That’s enough. I think what the client said was extremely unprofessional and I’m sorry you had to hear it.

Never heard of anything like this. It is insane, of course.
