Lots of guides out there on this. Basically:
> Engage with the book, before and after reading
- before reading: think about why you’re reading, what you want to get out of it, and what you know about the topic already
- after reading: summarize, write down notes, imagine having a conversation about the content, tell your SO about the chapter
> Actively tie what you’re reading to things you already know (this is key). Ask yourself how it changes or reinforces concepts you were already familiar with.
> Slow down. Better to carefully read and consider 1 book than skim 10 books without remembering anything
There's a famous book on this aptly titled "How to Read a Book" by Adler.
The following is a quick summary, but long story short, if you want to retain information you need to read it *actively*. Marking passages, taking notes, mentally placing arguments of a book within the overall structure as outlined in the intro and table of contents, i.e. not casual bedside table reading.

Somewhat adjacent...with economist articles I sit and think what my “letter to the editor” opinion piece would be after each one. Reflection aids retention for me. Good luck!
Hop on a bike at the hotel in the morning and after long day at client site and read / take notes.
Something about the light exercise helps me retain so much more.
And then after an hour I have a great sleep.
