I really used to beat myself up about this kind of thing. Not only performance, but I would really internalize it if a client was upset, or if I was at odds with a colleague or boss in some way. But I try really hard not to do that anymore, particularly now that I have a wife and kids. They don’t want an anxiety-racked grump at home and they don’t deserve it.
The first 5 years of my career I absolutely absorbed everything personally and felt awful all the time. Now I have the experience and confidence to speak my opinion and fight for what's right. And if I lose I know I tried and can sleep at night knowing I gave it my best shot.
It only took you five years??? 🤣🤣🤣
Seriously though - this is such the right attitude. Good on ya.
It's definitely not all your fault. There are systems in place that make it almost impossible to be successful without sacrificing a lot. Be that client expectations, scope creep, low budgets, short timelines, etc.
People look for someone to blame and they use "performance" to justify it. It's not one person at fault, it's the process. And unless that changes, you'll feel like it's you when it's not.
What do you mean by performance is down? Brand equity? Sales? Your performance? Regardless, advertising is only one fraction of the marketing equation. We can only do so much when pricing, placement, production (of product) and so much more affect outcomes. There’s some stat out there about how what creative agencies can possibly even impact is far less than people realize.
