I’m sure you are charging out your midlevels at at the least 1k an hour, so that’s easily 100k * whatever realization percentage you have. That’s more than enough to make up for whatever flimsy 5-10k raise we are asking for, no? I just went to bed at 2am and woke up at 6 for 4 fire drills. Let this misery end, Sir DPW, esquire!

How long does it take to make at least $300k per year if you are in-house?

I know that some other associates at my level are approximately 30% behind other associates in hours on a month to month basis. Yet all of these associates say they are “at capacity”, and myself and another associate still end up being assigned work instead of them. How do we handle this? For reference, all associates are around the firms minimum requirement, it’s just that a few of us are 30+% over and it is leading to burnout.

I work at a ‘free market’ firm and have developed a very good reputation among partners. Naturally, they are drowning me in work. Each time a new case comes up, the partner will email asking if I have “time and interest” in helping. When I’m at capacity, I take these words at face value and explain why I can’t do it, and that seems to work out ok with no hard feelings. But what’s the “interest” thing? If I don’t want to work on a toxic tort case, do I just say that and pass?
