I just did this and as a senior candidate, I think recruiters can hurt more than they help sometimes. I did use some to cover all bases but they did not get me attention at the jobs I wanted, they gave me incorrect advice about the best I’d be able to get, and they tried to pressure me into settling.
You’ve probably made a fair amount of connections over the years (classmates, opposing counsel, former coworkers who have left your firm etc) who you can approach directly to pass your resume along and that will work 1000x better than just going through HR and only applying to listed positions (which are usually only for junior/midlevel roles). Biggest thing I learned is not to restrict myself to listed positions and to not just go through HR but instead milk connections as much as possible (it’s zero effort for them to forward a resume if they think you’re a reasonable candidate). I got multiple job offers where I applied through HR, HR ignored me for weeks/months, I sent an attorney I knew an email, suddenly HR and the firm was all over me.
It’s definitely harder to lateral as a senior candidate, but you probably have a unique skillset at this point where maybe there’s not a ton of places you’d be a great fit, but for the places where you are a fit, there’s not going to be a lot of competition. Maybe start looking now, but expect it to take a few months. Not a ton of hiring atm with election/holidays/year end closings distractions.
Probably should start now, as things will slow down around the holidays. I've always had better luck with a recruiter than just on my own.
