Unexpectedly stepping into the managing partner position at my office (smaller office of large firm). Looking for any and all tips, books, podcasts, apps, and other resources on effective law firm management, time management as a managing partner, organizational resources, etc. The internet has so many suggestions but I’m hoping to hear what’s been helpful to you personally. Thanks!

I was in a similar situation. I ended up engaging an executive coaching group which has helped a lot. I listened to many management/leadership books. Trillion dollar coach, traction, the five dysfunctions of a team, the culture code. If you are at a firm that tracks a significant amount of financial data, try to get fluent in it. Didn’t come naturally to me at all but ultimately your numbers tell you a lot. I also am a big believer in talking to your team about what they are looking for, what motivates them, etc. congratulations it’s a lot of work but an opportunity to create an environment that helps your people thrive.

Give feedback - good or bad. I can’t understand how so many managers (at least those I’ve encountered) don’t talk to their colleagues/staff. Develop systems that work at least 80% of the time and evolve them as needed. Implement proper on boarding of new staff. Don’t focus on bad employees to the point you ignore the good ones. My favorite podcasts are WorkLife with Adam Gant and How to Be Awesome at Your Job.

Hi mates,

Anyone you know who has moved from Operations to BA and doing well ?

If yes what are the major challenges as a BA when you have moved from Functional Team ?

So I work as an assistant manager at a restaurant for the past 9 months. I've worked in restaurants for the past 6 years science I was 16. Now I'm 22. I went to a trade school for media and film. I got a dream opportunity to work in the field making about the same or 10% more. I told myself the only reason I'd leave this company is for this type of job. Should I take the chance at this job and leave the restaurant that is on the rise and growing?

I got into Management a year ago and now I miss developing. How do software engineers turned managers feel about their switch over to people management?

For the past 25+ years, I've been a devops engineer, cloud architect and team lead on many projects. I would like to make a career move into IT Management (i.e. DevOps Manager, Director of Cloud Ops, etc.). When it comes to skills needed, what should my focus be on and how would that translate onto a resume? I would love to still be hands-on to utilize my tech knowledge.

I’m interested in transitioning to a role in the consumer markets sector. I’ve been on a staff aug project doing back office compliance work so I’ve been trying to apply to different firms but I’m not having much luck. As additional background I’ve been running a successful side hustle for about 6 years, and I’ve gotten a decent understanding of growing a small business, consumer habits, but unfortunately I don’t have any consulting experience in consumer markets. Any advice or leads? TIA!

My wife started as an M at Accenture earlier this year coming from industry. I’ve never worked at Accenture or any b4, but I had to explain to her how up or out works. She also didn’t know that she came in with 24 months at level and what that meant. Really surprised none of this was communicated during hiring or by her manager.

Do you continue to see in-flight interview processes through once you’ve received and accepted an offer? It feels premature to cut the chord on the others, but also the decision between the companies becomes harder. Also afraid of the possibility to go back on the acceptance of the one role in favor of another.
