(Very) junior associate at a big 4 firm, but I really like the data protection/ cyber security work I’ve been doing. Good rates too. On the flip side, I really dislike wage and hour, discrimination/harassment litigation. I want to do the data protection work full time, and there’s enough work but I keep getting pulled into the wage & hour lit. I know it’s early and it’s probably good for me to be well rounded this early on, but does anyone have advice on how to eventually specialize for good?

Try to make yourself indispensable to the partners who handle data protection work—that way, you’ll have a stronger position to politely turn down wage and hour cases by saying you’re already swamped. If you’re trying to hit your hours, it’s usually not a good idea to say no to everything as a junior. Instead, lean into the data protection group and ask if they have more work to send your way.

You need to become the go to associate for the partners that handle that work. Then leave the big4 to join a firm with a data protection group. When I was at a big 4 I was “specialized” and the only associate in an area but there wasn’t enough work to do it exclusively.

You’re not going to have much luck avoiding wage and hour cases as an L&E lawyer. Learn to embrace it.

Quick question.
I was a contractor for a big company and they just let me know that my last day is December 30th. I got this position thanks to a recruiting company that has been great and gives me benefits.
Should I:
- Continue working with the recruiting company, hoping that they will find another position for me? (as they told me they will, and when they applied me I started working with my current company within 2 weeks)
- Work with the recruiter + apply for jobs on my own?

I keep telling her it’s all new to me too. Grace is not a word in her vocab. And I am feeling graceless.

Venting a bit: Are you finding DEI groups at work overrun with allies. Is there also an increase in celebrating said allies? Is it just me?

Most of the groups I'm in (esp. event teams) are being taken over by allies wanting to do what they think should be done to 'celebrate' whatever topic the month is, usually speaking over marginalized coworkers and rarely consulting with them. It seems like the only time this doesn't happen is for gay (usually yt) men or BHM. I'm just feeling so...minimized.

Interviewing with a startup and they’d like me to do a presentation on some of the financial processes I am working/ worked on. What is the best way to present this info that I usually do in excel? Would a PowerPoint deck be the best approach with the info or a google Sheet?

Quite miffed as I just got a small pay rise and now I think this plus the upcoming not rises in utilities and inflation will pretty much cancel it out.

What is considered a “large” caseload in employment litigation? I work at a large L&E boutique law firm and handling about 14-15 active litigation cases in state/federal court or arbitration. Some of these matters are multi-plaintiff and multi-defendant cases, but none are class actions. This does not include any matters I am handling in the charge stage or in pre-litigation. Not sure if that’s a typical caseload or not?
