We asked both sets of grandparents pick their names. They didn’t go crazy just grandma/grandpa and nana/poppy. They also don’t force anything though. My daughter called “grandpa”, “papa” for a long time and no one cared, she calls him grandpa now that she has a better handle on speech.
I think the entitlement of in-laws (or parents) can be super grating on nerves especially when it’s something silly like a nickname they gave themselves and now expect everyone to use.
This is very prevalent where I come from, and it seems to me that grandparents put a lot of importance into how they’re called. I myself don’t call them those names, but I do refer to them as ‘mama x’ and ‘papa y’ to my son. I feel like they’re here for such a short amount of time that I’ll try honoring what they want to be called for my son’s sake. Just a different POV, but totally get where your coming from, it is weird objectively thinking about it 😂
Hm. Etiquette says you should call people what they prefer, but adding “mama” and “daddy” to adult names is something that has to be agreed upon. If she wants the kid to call them that, that’s weird. They aren’t the kids extra mama and daddy.
What does your husband call them when referring to them with the kid?
Personally I’d never call my ILs anything like that but Im not fussed if they resent me and I think they know that. I hold the cards on how often they see us, so don’t play me!
My mother wanted to be called grandmother. Super cringe. I told her to think of a compromise or I would tell my kids she only wanted to be called grandma but in the voice of a donkey going hee haw. Grand ma!
It was a nail biter!
Settled on grand mommy.
Both have to be comfortable with the name. And your toddler will get better with their speech in time. Think long game.
