Absolutely not, but if they developed a passion for the field without my input I wouldn't discourage it either.
It's difficult, expensive and requires you to commit the best years of your life. There was a time when compensation and prestige as an attending was market beating but that time has long passed. If you truly want to be a physician to the exclusion of everything else do it, otherwise chase WLB and compensation.
No way- there are so many health related career options with more flexibility and less red tape than a physician. Also less cost (malpractice, professional memberships, CMEs, etc).
I would. I have lot of flexibility and make around $600k. I like providing care to my patients. Staff in my offices deal with the red tape, etc. You have to be smart and look for the right opportunities after graduating.
It's been 5 years since I graduated. My next step is to move to Germany. I feel the pandemic has delayed my expected career development. Not sure if the feeling is universal.
I would say my experiences have been rich and fulfilling but I leave the options open for my kids to pursue what they are passionate about.
If it is medicine, that’s fine but in my opinion, the long term goal is not just monetary but what makes you want to wake up and go to work with a smile.
My 2 cents 🙂
I think that you should leave to them!!Everyone has some forte. So ,if they have that thing you will see eventually , whatever it is !! physician or anything they enjoy doing as a career …
Yes
Not unless they are interested in it only for patient care. Compensation for time actually spent to complete necessary work for proper patient care isn’t great and is only getting worse.
Cost for entry is crazy high (college plus Med school plus loosing your 20’s)
Stress is massive (literally
Life and death at times while being told you are
Overbooked and need to squeeze people in time that doesn’t exist)
If you do struggle to make it the whole way through there is little alternative or exit path with massive debt. (Two of my medical school classmates who graduated and either failed to match or complete residency committed suicide and that’s just people I know of)
I love my patients and what I do but sometimes I wonder if even I would do it again if given the choice to start over knowing what I do now.
