Want to move from Big 4 to Big Law: I have a JD, LLM and a previous CPA. I have been at a Big 4 in Los Angeles for 2 years working on tax controversy cases and consulting clients on various tax issues. As a lawyer I want to go into a law firm and do tax law. Any advice?

1. Find a local recruiter with really good connections in the big law space that can help you translate your experience and make it relevant to a law firm.

2. Network heavily at bar associations in the LA area.

3. Find alumni from your JD and LLM programs that work at law firms and may be willing to recommend you

I want to position myself in the best way to get into a law firm. I like the controversy work, but not sure how well it translates into a law firm work.

Without a JD or LLM from a top school, especially the LLM, I would recommend you look into a rotation position with your firm’s Washington National Tax practice, apply for IRS chief counsel or the DOJ because you have tax controversy experience, or settle for a reputable mid size firm so you can develop the experience and skills that a big law firm would be looking for.

Do you have top jd or llm name of tip top grades?

Depends on need but it’s possible.

I would say try to get a couple of more years of transactional tax experience, unless what you want to do is tax controversy work.

Anyone have any thoughts on a fair salary for a part time virtual tax prep-focused position? I’ve been made an offer for south of 800 hours/year (fluctuating for seasonal ebb and flow, of course), and I’m curious whether it’s a decent offer or not. I have 13 years of experience in a big box franchise where I’ve handled complex returns from day 1. 30% of my workload has been 1120/1120S/1065 and the rest higher-level 1040s and a few 1041s & 990s. I’ll be bringing 75-100 clients with me.

Transitioning from com. lit into tax controversy?

I have a tax LLM and started my career out of law school doing M&A tax at a big4. After 9 months, I got out of big4 transactional hell and into whatever litigation I could find. I now practice commercial lit but would welcome the opportunity to eventually transition into tax controversy (which I wasn’t able to do before). Does my commercial litigation “break” hurt my prospect? How long can I stay in com lit without hurting my chances even more?
