I switched and will agree that the stress is still there and, honestly, sometimes worse than in client service (you suddenly have a lot more clients and instead of a filing deadline, issues can be significantly heavier.) Re: comp- I made $90k when at about 6 years of experience; $120k at around 8 years of experience, and $140k around 10 years. None of those include bonus. Hope that helps! Don’t come to Hr for less stress or more balance. If that’s what you’re seeking, go to industry. Comp will be lower but you’ll likely be less stressed and working 45-45 as opposed to 60-75.
Former client server turned HR and then elsewhere here… depending on your rank you may come over with a decent salary but raises will be very very low since you are leaving client service. You also will have different kinds of stress than client serving but it’s still there and can be just as frustrating. I would check the careers site or reach out to people in positions you are interested in to learn more.
You may have to start over if you don’t have prior HR experience in which case the salary will be high.
You likely won’t straight out of consulting, unless you are able to land a manager position or higher (which will take a lot of convincing without any proper HR experience). There are also specialist and generalist positions that pay that much, but firms generally prefer at least a few years of dedicated HR experience before they’re willing to offer those types of positions.
