OK everyone, this is pretty bleak stuff in here right now. Like all of you, I was also laid off when we delivered our project to the customer. That was in early November and I too sometimes feel pretty hopeless. Here's the thing that we all need to remember, we cannot let this get to us. It affects your mood, which creeps into your conversational tone and how you answer questions from prospective employers. We have dealt with a "superstorm" of events recently that no one (HR, hiring managers and the companies they work for) is prepared to deal with. Companies want people back in the office. They paid tons of money on rent for spaces that are still mostly unoccupied. This affects the number of people that they can hire. The businesses need to attract people back into the office which comes in the form of food/snacks or other pleasant accommodations that cost money, further reducing money to hire new talent. Of course we would all prefer to work from home and most of us are probably hitting up the "remote" jobs on the job boards and seeing them rapidly disappear.
But fear not my friends, I think that I have noticed something that has changed that we have not noticed, hence not adjusted our resume's for, and are not getting call backs for. I am an IT Project Manager. I have sent out tons of tailored resumes for each position with a lot of "thanks for your interest, but we are moving forward with another candidate that more closely aligns with our requirements". Everyone please go back (or now go forward) and look at the job descriptions very closely and I think that you will see that the companies are combining the requirements of multiple jobs into one and calling it "Project Manager" (or whatever job titles you are seeking). I need to be a PM, Scrum Master, and Product Owner all in one to align with the requirements they are looking for, I think that companies are consciously doing this because they cannot afford to hire multiple roles, so they are looking to maximize their investment.
This is something that I have noticed since mid-December; that and the salaries have mostly bottomed out for most all roles. I am not saying that this is the absolute reason, but it is what I am seeing and what I am including in my resume's going forward. I am going to try to identify as many roles that I am qualified for and see if that makes a difference.
In any case friends, I know that it is hard and the outlook is bleak. We just can't afford to not be somehow optimistic! Use this time to find some books or free online courses so you can maybe add a skill or offer something new to the next gig. Definitely go for a walk and talk about what this stress is doing to you and how your outlook is low to someone (ANYONE!), do NOT suffer in silence and DO NOT LET THIS BEAT US!
Stay positive my friends, it's all we have left.

I see a lot of posted roles which ask for 2-3 roles all-in-one. And lots of ridiculously low pay. Like $120k-$135k for senior data scientist. That’s just a bit over what I was making seven years ago when I first became a senior data scientist. It’s nonsense.
It’s really brutal for all of us. Sometimes I think I want to give up everything and become a farmer. Or go to a smaller cheaper country and start something of my own.. I just don’t know what I am good at anymore because I have lost all confidence in myself
I’ve been out of work since May and I feel hopeless too … I hope things improve and soon!
I was laid off in April. I had recruiters reaching out daily a few months before then but it’s been completely dry since. I’m hoping that now a lot of companies have rounded out their fiscal years something might pick up.
Previously, I've never been out of a job for longer than 2 weeks.
Now, I've been unemployed since June, and like you, I've sent out hundreds of applications with 20% rejections, 2 interviews that dropped me after round 3, and the rest no reply whatsoever.
My savings are running low at this point. I'm even applying for entry-level support positions and can't seem to get a call back on those.
I suffer from pretty severe social anxiety (COVID didn't help - a long period of not having to really deal with other people face-to-face coupled with how many people became absolute arseholes during lockdown), so it's not exactly like I can get a job running a register...
I've been struggling after getting let go from a company I helped to build (one of the very first employees) after 5 years. The company was bought out and doesn't exist anymore. I nabbed a contract job and it just ended at the end of the year. It's incredibly depressing considering our entire society relies on tech, but no one seems have any permanent openings, or the market is so saturated right now that competition is insane. I live in Los Angeles and I'm lucky if I even get an application view from an employer. This is just to commiserate your misery. I'm sorry you're struggling too. I agree, we should band together and build an empire.
It'll come back. None of this has anything to do with us. The business folks ran tech companies into the ground, now we have to wait for them to move on to some other industry so we can rebuild. Give it a few years, go work on a farm (or McDonalds) for a while.
huh wow thanks bud
Same with me. I was laid off back on April and have been actively applying to jobs and got my CBAP recently. I had more than 8 interviews and some to the end but with rejection emails after. I almost gave up and have no confidence in myself. I want to move to something else or work in customer service.
Same. I’m having to dip into my 401k just to pay rent. I’ve sent out tons of resumes and zero leads.
Enjoy the moment that you are off because before you know it, it’s back to the grind and your time off will be limited again. This is a bump on the road. Look at your employment as long term engagement. Within the next 5-10 years, you are targeting let’s say to make $500k. The first year would be a wash given the state of economy and slow employment. But you will plan to make this up the next few years would be the goal. I know it’s tough but we need to look at this as a marathon and not a sprin
I'm sorry. Just know you're not alone. Personally, I have never experienced such unprofessional recruiters/hiring managers in my entire life. It's truly appalling!
Welcome to the club
Sorry to hear that, it's a tough market out there, I've been in IT for more than 20 yrs in different toles and I have been out of work sine Feb '23, so I know too well how hard it is landing the right role in this economy. Good luck to all
Ditto. Hundreds of applications. And to the last round at least 6 times. No offers. And, like you, I find myself befuddled, running out of money (actually living entirely on credit right now), and demoralized. My confidence is in the toilet. But on the other hand it does help, marginally, to read so many others’ accounts of having the same struggle. At least it’s not personal—whatever is behind us not yet finding jobs. What pisses me off the most though is hearing about how, supposedly, the economy is doing GREAT, and unemployment is super lower. It makes me feel like gaslit on an epic scale.
Hey imagine not getting back into networking for over 5 years! I know if I got my recertification as a CCNP things would change…Just hang in there and remember it could be worse!
As a networking diploma grad Iam currently studying for my CCNA and even then I don't know how well I can do in this job market any tips for a fellow aspiring network engineer?
It sucks, but don’t give up! Took me 9 months, 400+ applications, 11 final round interviews before I landed a new job.
Wow! This gave me some hope!
It is brutal out there. I have 8 months in. Quite a few close ones but beat out by another candidate with more industry experience. My friend just landed a job after 13 months. So that gives me hope.
I was not laid off recently but I was laid off 2 years ago 2022 april due to looking for a new position. I took the oportunity to take 8 months off. Keep a positive outlook it is tough out there. With all the other countries exporting their workers to the U.S. it makes it tougher.
