There is NO PERMANENT record. I've seen this come up on Fishbowl a few times now and I'd love to know where it got started. Honestly, you guys. We're okay. Everyone breathe in deep. If you have a shitty reputation, that's the closest you get to a record, and that may hurt you. But otherwise unless you've broken the law and got caught, there isn't a log sheet of your minor infractions in a filing cabinet somewhere.
Depending on your level, they'll do a deep search of your agency history and definitely check with the people you provide as references.
It's illegal for them to ask anyone about your salary history, even you.
Anyone know why some postings ask for a GPA (or it’s a required field). I graduated college 10 years ago and that tidbit of info dissolved somewhere in my brain. I make up something reasonably close and wonder if they can even verify, or care to verify
A reference check is only calling the people you list as your references, and they’re allowed to ask anything they want. Calling companies you list as having worked there is legal, but the ONLY thing they’re allowed to ask is if you did actually work there (unless of course that person is one of your references). That was the law last time I checked, and I’m sure it varies by state, but that’s what I go off
Background check just runs your SSN to make sure you don't have a criminal record and to confirm you are who you say you are and from where you say you're from.
I know they can also look at your credit report (though I doubt any agencies care about that) and if you actually attended and graduated where you said you did
Actually, “informal” reference checks are now becoming more common. Which basically means they call up whomever they happen to know at the candidate’s previous Agency, or those they knew who worked with them. And the more senior the position, the more they dig around. They don’t often just rely on the three cherry-picked references the candidate provided.
On the credit check-it can matter, depending on the client. Had a friend get turned-down for a job with a bank as her primary client, based on her atrocious credit. And a really shitty credit score does not reflect highly on someone's ability to manage their responsibilities. I'm sure it depends on the situation and the agency, but don't underestimate the credit score.
They do it all!
Thanks for your reply, Sorry I guess I meant background check.
It all depends on the agency.
Background check only goes back 7 years, and it can pull everything from unpaid parking tickets (if you have enough of them) to felonies
Most call former employers and confirm dates of employment and title. They usually run criminal background check Depends on state, but in NY asking salary history is illegal these days
