I’ve watched 2 Senior creatives RETIRE. Yes actually RETIRE. Like they had retirement parties and everything. Both were older than 65 one was British so he went back to the UK the other literally went to raise horses . They had been working for their respective agencies for 10 years at least , one of them for 20. Yes TWENTY years.
One was a ECD and was the leader of the creative team. The other was a SVP GCD with dedicated clients who were at the retirement party too lol.
It def gave everyone a bit of like “okay you don’t just die at your desk in this industry you can be successful and actually retire it CAN happen”
Oh! And both were actually still selling in ideas / designing/ converting/going on shoots/ pitching/ interviewing candidates/mentoring junior levels/running their respective books of business - getting hands dirty when they needed to. They were still very much busy doing work that is expected at that level.
Did a stint in-house at one of the world’s biggest banks. Had an art director in her 60s. She still “got it”, although the work mostly sucked and there was no incentive to outperform.
we got a senior writer in her 50s
she's been such an amazing mentor
You don’t see many at big agencies.
But the small more obscure shops have legit soccer moms (mid 40s) as regular CWs and ADs.
Don’t necessarily mean old, but that age as a regular CW and AD is out of the ordinary for sure.
At 64, I think I’m the oldest CD in advertising.
