What are some general warm-up prompts that can be applied to different texts & get students' wheels turning before a lesson or discussion?

How do you best support your students who do not speak English? I have four ELL’s in my 6th grade ELA class and they don’t receive push-in or pull-out Bilingual support during my class. Do you pull them for small group to provide instruction separately or do you just try to use google translate to translate your lessons and the work? Any best practices? I’d love some help.

How do you come up with your labs to make sure they are aligned with the unit.? I feel like I am doing well on EOC scores but I feel like my class is a drag because we just drill concepts and the labs are not making the connections I’d like between the lesson and the activity. It becomes them just following my instruction and not much scientific processing or troubleshooting to come up with the conclusion. I want to make scientist not just students that pass the EOC.

High school special class (self-contained) teachers: What do you use for planning? I’ve always been an inclusive teacher, so I followed the plan book of my co-teacher. How do you engage your students in more reading outside of what is required in the classroom? With each passing year I am finding an ever shrinking population of students, including honors students, who actually read beyond what is posted in social media or video games. Students willingly volunteer that they do not read and most parents see it as a non-issue. I tell my students that the best readers are usually the best writers. What are some strategies that you use beyond reading logs ?

I recently moved to a different district and am starting to plan ahead for next year. What novels and plays do you think are worthwhile and essential for 10th, 11th and Pre-AP? I have many in mind that I have used before but am really looking for some fresh ideas!

Anyone have any good advice for getting students to think/respond on their own? So many times when I ask them to write their own thoughts about something and to explain why they hold that opinion, many students get stuck and/or turn to the Internet. And then I find myself repeating, I’m asking for YOUR thoughts about this, not someone else’s. I teach grades 9 & 11.

Today, my entire class stated they do not feel comfortable working with the school's instructional coach. When beginning a piece of literature, I first help the kids access the relevant culture. I have used web quests, but I have found that the kids researching their choice of topics and creating Slides containing information and pics results in more students participating. Recently they researched heraldry for the Medieval Era and reproduced either a family crest that they found or created their own personal crest. Anyone have other activities they use?

Is there any writing prompts that stand out to you in the responses you get from students? Preferably ones that are outside the box, but I'd love to hear some tried and true traditional ones too!

I teach middle school reading intervention, but I am noticing a high amount of students at our school do not have any phonemic awareness. What are you best ways to combat this?
