I started using IXL for my bell work. I don’t expect students to reach a specific score, but it’s the time on task. I noticed that most students don’t want to settle for low scores on IXL. I also like the fact that I can quickly look at the students scores to see if the are doing it or not. It takes a lot of pressure off me.
You can use current events.
Any prompt that gets students thinking about how the topic can be related to their lives. Creating essential questions might be a good place to start.
If we are reading a text, I give them a page to read and ask a thought provoking question. Then they share with their partner. Some nice conversations happen during this time.
