What are some general warm-up prompts that can be applied to different texts & get students' wheels turning before a lesson or discussion?

I started using IXL for my bell work. I don’t expect students to reach a specific score, but it’s the time on task. I noticed that most students don’t want to settle for low scores on IXL. I also like the fact that I can quickly look at the students scores to see if the are doing it or not. It takes a lot of pressure off me.

You can use current events.

Any prompt that gets students thinking about how the topic can be related to their lives. Creating essential questions might be a good place to start.

If we are reading a text, I give them a page to read and ask a thought provoking question. Then they share with their partner. Some nice conversations happen during this time.

I teach some drum lessons on the side and was wondering what a good range for a 30 min lesson would be? For those I’ve taught, the kids are typically in elementary school, so I’m getting them the basics. It’s been fun seeing some of them perform in talent shows even within the year! Curious what everyone thinks the market range is for good (not professional) drum lessons are?

Any tips for note taking? My biggest struggle is retaining information communicated verbally. To compound the issue, I’m a millennial and was never taught note taking, short hand, or cursive (outside a week long lesson to write our names) in school. It takes me forever to write out notes and while I’m writing I miss everything that’s being said. I have no problem putting in the work to learn techniques but can’t find helpful resources.

Did anyone else adopt the new Florida Wonders curriculum? We just adopted it this school year, and I teach 4th grade. My team and I have not found a good flow, schedule, or whatever you want to call it. We feel like it teaches too many skills in one lesson, and we are not able to truly teach anything “deep” enough for students to master. Does anyone have any insight? What do you do? Do you like the curriculum? Why or why not? Would you be willing to share what you do weekly/daily? Thanks!

Mistakes are the learned lessons to a better career. But every time I have made a mistake, it seems like it is the end of the world. I want to hear stories...of a time where you made a mistake and your superiors did not freak out, but used it as a lesson for you. does that exist anywhere?

When you’re slammed, but all the associates in your area/practice group are slammed as well, how does your firm/partners handle additional work coming in? Is the expectation that you literally bill 70 hours a week or 14/15 hours a day or do they shift work to other offices and associates in maybe slower practice groups? I’m already on track for about 215 this month and keep getting buried. More work keeps coming in and I’m on the verge of a breakdown.
