Whatever commercial litigation job you can get. Many firms will not hire from ID firms so you need to apply broadly. Unfortunately ID can be a black mark on your resume, not something that helps you with new opportunities outside of ID.
Yeah it’s perceived as the lowest of the low. And those skills you listed (depos, hearings, etc.) - decent firms won’t even let juniors do those things so it’s not useful experience outside of high volume, low rate, low sophistication firms that just throw juniors into the fray right away.
Personal Injury Law is the best way to go and given your experience insurance defense, makes you that much more employable. What better position to be in, help injured clients and make a really good salary + incentives. Just my two cents.
I agree we jump at the chance to hire a ID attorney especially for the inside knowledge. Attorneys do not have a salary but they share a % of the fee which can be handsome. However, you must learn how to manage your money until you make bank with a cushion. I've been with an attorney about 14 years at two different firms. He lost his salary was furious until he realized the difference in pay. Then again at our current firm wherein he made more money than anyone else in the firm. I will say some ID guys cannot make the switch and return to ID. No compassion for the client, and unable to spend $$$ on a case for trial. The theroy of were spending the clients money versus bill the insurance company gets them in hot water. The attorneys who successfully make the jump never look back. Give it a shot.
Not all ID is the “lowest of the low.” But to answer your question, employment

I take it you’ve been clerking in ID and it’s in that realm that you’ve been told your writing and researching skills are great?
