I like it. Nowadays you need a backstory wound to really connect to and lead people. Some moment of vulnerability in the past that made you become totally different, yet stay the same. In addition to your blue collar background story, I suggest:
- recovering from divorce
- managing chronic disease
- death of a family member
- how you came out as LGBTQIA+
Thanks, OW. I have never once shared or even hinted at my personal trauma and it’s not something that anyone would know from the outside. However, I know it makes me a more empathetic human and leader. Something the world could use.

My parents loved and celebrated my siblings and I no matter what. We’re all very different and yet we all felt we were special growing up. That translated into confidence to dream big but not be knocked if stuff didn’t work out.
We also grew up in a very humble household and I was not allowed go on school tours. Birthday celebrations were “buns!” at home.
As adults we’re all generous with what we have, to varying degrees, but we’re also all big savers rather than spenders. I don’t believe that access to money growing up defines a personality or life-outcome. There’s a lot more to what makes a person.
There’s also a line in a Nancy Tillman book that I think captures the value of love and praise of a child: “You are loved, you are loved, you are loved they all say. So hold your head high and don’t be afraid. March to the front of your own parade. If you’re still my small baby or all the way grown, my promise to you is you’re never alone. You are my angel, my darling, my star. And my love will find you wherever you are”.

When leaving a movie theater, my parents were mugged and murdered in front of me, leaving me to be raised by the family butler.
Later, seeing my uncle shot in a mugging by a criminal I'd earlier stood by and let get away.
Now I have an uncontrollable expulsion of white stickies that ejects from my wrists

Getting bullied in middle school. Turned me into a protector for the marginalized.
I had a horrible childhood of both sexual and physcial abuse. No heat, electric or food at times. Mother refused to sign papers for me to go to college. I had no clue I could emancipate myself bc i again bc of the abuse was hidden and sheltered from EVERYONE. But I found someone to help co-sign the college loan for me and was able to get away from it all. I was determined to not live that life nor put my kids through it. I am happily married, have a house, 2 children, and am living a very comfortable life that i can afford to give my children everything I did not get (bday parties, sports, heat, electric, food, vacations, etc).
OP are you me?
