Depending on the company, they could be the full owners of the product and it’s features. Including understanding customer needs, prioritizing activity, working with marketing, working with ops, and working with the broader product team if it’s part of an ecosystem.
I think many folks like the ownership and the tangible output of a “product”...and of course PMs tend to get pay closer to SWE than other roles (in some FAANG, this makes total sense given that their PMs are also technically skilled)
Kinda similar to project management and PMO in our industry. Nothing of real value and your entire performance is contingent on your team doing well. Except you get paid $$$ to do it
Product Management typically owns a specific product line, from development through end of life. This includes ensuring market and customer requirements are gathered, product is launched, product is maintained during its life, and finally retired properly.
At some places PM only takes over a product after Product Development is near launch. At other places, PM owns it from concept through EOL
The launch of an apple product?
Do these roles exist out side of the tech side? For example, leading the development of a new food line at Kroger, or a sneaker at Nike
Yeah they do. And you usually dont have to be a deep expert. It's more about operationalizing a standard process (e.g. gather requirements, work with experts to have them turn it into a design,...).
Some call it product line managers, others product managers
I can't believe (in a good way) that people spoon feed these answers to questions that could easily be figured out by typing the exact same question in google. You are a patient bunch.
Also, I think if you don't even know what the job is you probably aren't qualified for it.
I did google ahead of time, but answers vary widely across industries in terms of the responsibilities of a product manager (imagine that). Not to mention the aspect of the post asking why the role is considered appealing by consultants specifically. Nowhere did I say I was considering an opening, I think you need to work on your attention to detail...
