What is an acceptable learning curve for an entry level position? Trying to manage my expectations.

Might depend on certain variables (size of team, complexity, training schedule), but I see it as 3 months to learn the basics, 6 months to perform key tasks autonomously. Then a year to be in the position to train someone else at the entry level (so, well versed on all facets of the job)

Excellent questions.

I’d narrow down to IF you hire a good fit (or someone who will outgrow entry level skills fast.)

aka High Performer 1-3 month training and then <1 year before they demand change.

Or if you want someone who’ll be content in entry level for a while they’ll prob take longer.

Aka Average Performer 3-12 months training and maybe they’ll want more but slow to take action or instigate change.

I have had staff not showing much of a learning curve for over a year despite constant feedback and coaching. I would not put a number on the timelines/duration, I have started to breakdown what learning curve milestones mean for each of my staff and whether or not they meet them on a daily basis. Almost like showing behavioral traits that result in learnings.

If you are going from rank-and-file to a low-level administrative position, I wouldn't worry if it took you 3 months to even 6 months to feel comfortable in your new skin. Of course, you need to have a good grasp on the basics within 4-6 weeks. If you are moving up the corporate ladded to ever-higher positions of authority, I wouldn't sweat too much if it takes three months to get your sea legs under you. All of that said, I would advice you not to be afraid to admit that you are getting nosebleeds at this height and would like to go down a flight. You never know how high is too high until you stand on the upper level and look over the edge. If you are still clueless and stumbling after 3 or 4 months, start some self-evaluation to determine why, if there is any remedy, or what to do in response.

Do they take notes when you train them? And/or do you provide written documentation/work instructions for all their tasks?

Our annual reviews are approaching & one of my direct reports has been with us for almost six years w/ little growth. My reco was to let him go & find a stronger, hungrier & more motivated designer at the same level. However, my boss instead wants us to promote him in hopes that will spark some motivation. I am not behind this decision & have voiced my multitude of concerns in promoting an employee who doesn't deserve it. HR is behind the decision! Thoughts on promoting an undeserving report?

My remit quadrupled+ in a recent re-org with no increase in pay/promotion, my new director is new to the company and was zero help, and I was passed over for recent promotion during the comp cycle. The new director essentially began shutting me down any time I ask for clarity in my career progression. Now they have taken credit for the project I’ve been building over the past year+ without giving me props whatsoever to higher ups. What is the best plan of action here?

Hi everyone!

After years of hard work, I just got my first position in a leadership role! Yay! I’ll be leading a team of 12.
I wanted to know if you had any tips for me, things you wish you knew before, or things previous leaders did for/to you that you found admirable or stayed with you. I want to make sure I’m there for them and want to be a leader they will remember positively.

Thank you so much!!

I have been in management for the past 8 years and part of large corporations. I just recently joined a small organization that I have wanted to be a part of for the past 2 years, accepted the role of general manager. This organization knew that I don’t have general manager experience, no payroll experience, no experience setting prices, no purchasing experience and today, 6 days after starting, I have been asked to step down due to not being confident that I will be ready in 3 weeks…

I had a great review and a 5.5% raise and a great bonus at my company. But I also got a new Director and a peer manager of mine left the company, so I will be absorbing her team. In addition, my director said I will be receiving 'deep delegation' from them. I don't mind more work, but deep delegation is a new term I've never heard. What does that mean lol?
