No one knows where they got sick because we don’t have adequate contract tracing. My flight yesterday was completely full and the flight attendants are doing this multiple times and day, everyday.
I don’t think it’s the planes that are the issue. It’s the airports and everything else you have to do to get there.
Airplane is actually really safe. It has a medical grade ventilation system. China reports how everyone got infected when entering the border and so far I haven’t seen anyone who was report contracted on the plane.
I see your point but the traveling isn’t just being in an airplane which is well disinfected. It’s also interacting with your transportation (are you taking a taxi? Uber? Train? Bus?), TSA agency, and people in the airport. So if one of those people are slacking in their covid precautions then the whole safety chain is ruined
Just flew a week ago. I wore double mask and faceshield. Face shield was only for when I was walking through airport and boarding/de boarding. Flew delta so my row was empty. Agree with other posters that the main risk is the airport and then boarding or de boarding. People walking around the airport eating with no masks or crowding around the gate was a big concern so I just waited out in a more quiet area. Honestly no point in rushing onto the plane given how empty they are, plenty of overhead cabin space.
Plane ride itself is pretty safe from my understanding, I tried to avoid eating and drinking whenever possible but it’s tough with a 6 hour flight, so just waited when most people around me weren’t eating. They gave me some wipes but it’s worth bringing your own
I would worry more about the airport than the plane.
Planes in general seem pretty safe due to the hepa filters. That should give adequate protection to you if you sit a few rows away from a positive person. But what if the positive person sat next to you? I’m not sure if the filter would be able to take care of potential COVID aerosols before they reach you. Masks help but IMO I think there’s still a risk there
The area where spreading tends to happen is while you are boarding onto the plane or getting off the plane. The plane itself with distance is safe as long as you are not right next to someone. I would suggest when you board the plane to keep distance from other people. When you land and the door opens and everyone gets up and lines up close together avoid that. A window seat is probably best rather than an isle so the people lining up aren’t on top of you.

Stay home.
Yes! I would worry more about the airport..especially when you have a layover..
@deloitte 1 agreed - I hear SFO is a ghost town though
Good thread - thanks everyone
