What is one skill you want to learn this year?

Pivot tables in excel… I know “it’s not hard,” but I’ve never disciplined myself to sit down and watch in depth guides on how to structure and use them properly.

Pivot tables are a skill... easy to start, hard to master... good choice

So, this really isn’t a like professional skill, but I’ve been wanting to learn a second language for years and it’s one of my goals is to either learn Spanish or French this year so wish me luck

I am terrible with languages and I have always wanted to learn a new one. I vote for French and good luck!

Delegating. There are a lot of time I would benefit from delegating tasks to others but feel ultra responsible so put the work on myself.

Are you in a role where you can delegate?

Rollerblading. My six-year-old decided she wanted to learn to rollerblade last week, so I figure I should give it a try as well so we can get some exercise together.

that is cool! learning to do a skill with kids is a smart thing

I would like to brush up on some coding skills. Maybe look into one of those boot camps or online learning courses. My professional development has been lacking and this will hopefully put me in a better position to make a habit of it. Now it is just a matter of getting to it!

Are you going with Python? Or a different one?

More experience in CAD. I feel like I'm starting to need it more.

Is there a specific SW you want to learn?

Not related to work at all but I wanted to learn how to make my own sourdough and butter which I have been perfecting and will continue to perfect throughout the year. I want to be able to give people sourdough and butter for Christmas this year.

Butter?! That is a tough and long process haha

Influencing without authority

What is teaching you how to do this?

How does a sole engineer at a company go about getting management to actually care how production machines run? I’m the only mechanical engineer at my company dealing with a half dozen cranky production managers who think that I can “work my magic” on a machine. It’s not magic, just ignorance about the machine actually works. How to I get a manager to stop caring about the end product long enough for me to actually teach them about their own machine?
