What are expected utilisation rates for entry level consultants? Been here 9 months and only done billable work for about 3 months of that. Bored out of my mind for the majority of my time here.
For those of you who are in-house, how did you get comfortable with needing to be more of a generalist? I know some in-house roles, especially at large companies, are specialized. However, even then it just seems like you’re expected to know about so many different areas (with far less support than at a firm). I’m tired of billable hours, but I really love (& feel more comfortable) being a specialist.
How do you all track your billable hours? Want to move away from an excel sheet I manually update. Do you guys use software?
First year associate trying to decide between practice groups (CapM & M&A). One CapM partner has taken a liking to me (introduces me to clients/partners in other offices, has me assist with BD), but hasn't directly given me much billable work. Most of my work to date is with the M&A group, whom I really like to. I feel the CapM partner would be disappointed if I chose M&A, but I'm hesitant to choose CapM solely for him, when I don't get many billables through him. Anyone have any guidance?
County counsel experience - does anyone have insight into how working in a county counsel office might compare to a law firm? I know each one is probably different, but just wondering generally about work life balance, workload, etc. I’m looking to escape billable hours and pressure to find clients, and would like to work somewhere with real vacation days. Thanks!
Anyone else have to do mandatory “non-billable” hours? I just lateraled and this is blowing my mind. The ramp up has also been slow. Any tips?
Are there any public firms out there that don’t have billable hours requirements all year? I know that’s the norm just wondering if a unicorn exists
What’s the best thing for a new associate to do to get on billable work? I was mapped to an industry I have no experience in; how do I start gaining experience when I don’t have the experience to get on these projects?
what is the annual billable hours requirement for a manager/senior manager at KPMG? And is it enforced?
On pace for ~3750 billable hours this year. Worst three months of 17 year career. Send help plz
Ah! If the clients ever realize the number of billable hours wasted on making slides just ‘look’ pretty!!!!
My firm sent an email yesterday saying their tracking billable hours DAILY. It’s either they don’t think we’re working from home or about to have some layoffs 🤷🏼♀️
Started out hating Zoom depos. Kind of like them now. In hour two of a co-defendant’s examination, which is entirely irrelevant to my client, and I’ve clipped my nails, stretched fully, planned a hike for the weekend, ordered my home goods off Amazon, and it’s all billable time because I’m stuck on this thing.
Anyone else have family members who don’t understand that I can’t take personal calls/texts all the time because I’m trying to meet my daily billable goal?
Trying to explain billable hrs to hubs. I billed 160 this month, which he said “is only 40 hr weeks” (true) - but how many hrs do you figure you “work” or are in the office to bill 150?
I love when staffing requests result in more and more BD offers with no billable hours. 🥳🥳
Am being held on the bench for over a month now for a series of projects that keep falling through. Have had multiple projects reach out to staff me on billable work, but my group’s head partner keeps going behind my back and blocking it from happening. I’ve never been so annoyed, I want to do work
What should I wear for an interview to lateral into big law as a woman? My current practice is very casual and I rarely dress even in business casual clothes. Go for bright colored blouse with suit jacket and pants? Skirt a must? Stay classic with black and white? Heels or flat shoes? Do I need to do my nails? Hair curled/put back? Not sure how much this all matters beyond generally dressing up.
First job out of college so pardon my ignorance.. but are other jobs as high stakes as B4? Like the whole tier rating system, metrics tracking, snapshots.. I’m
Campus hire. New to investing/retirement savings. I know it’s important to “max out my 401(k)” so I selected my pre-tax 401k contribution to the % that my employer matches to on my account. Is that al
I’m waiting on my h1b transfer. If I got rfe, I really want to use the waiting time to visit my family (have more than enough pto left with my current employer). Anyone know if it’s possible to use my old I797 to get VISA stamp? Then putting notice after I’m back.
I’ve been dating someone from the dating apps for a couple months and we became exclusive a month in. He made me feel like the most special person and told me how much he loved me. And somehow I had this weird gut feeling and as psycho as I sound, I made a fake dating profile to see if he was on it. Not only did I find it, I matched with him and he has been messaging the fake profile while also telling me how he loves me. How do I confront him about this?
Where can I go to find a list of the different city tiers in the United States? Google searches aren’t working.
Does anyone have any insight into what KPMG‘s Spectrum practice is about? I’ve been reached out to for a “SENIOR SPECIALIST. DELIVERY PRODUCTION SUPPORT” role in their Advisory practice and the career page says it’ll be in their Spectrum practice. KPMG
If anyone is looking to adopt an amazing pupper, look no further than my girl Annelle (Nelly) (6 yo). I’m trying hard to get her adopted! Super sweet, good with kids and dogs. Not cat tested. Happy to chill all day but full of energy outdoors. 🐾 https://petlover.petstablished.com/pets/public/1159058?awo=Atlanta+Lab+Rescue&widget=false
To hr professionals in finance..I’m considering getting an online certificate through Cornell in data/analytics. Worth it or do employers think it’s equivalent to Coursera?
Where do more boutique firms (like Oliver Wyman, Roland Berger, Huron, zs, slalom) rank in comparison to big 4 or Accenture or ibm? I know mbb is top tier but I feel like everyone else is debatable
I feel guilty not living close to my parents/family. My parents pretty much have sacrificed any fun in their lives so I could have an easy and fun adulthood. Now that I’m far away and potentially going to be further due to my SO, I just feel exhausted by the guilt especially seeing my parents get older. If they were nagging about me moving closer I wouldn’t feel as bad but it’s worse because they don’t say anything but I know it’s hard for them to be so far. Anyone else deal wit this?
Anyone use edgenuity? I'm starting Monday with students, never been trained, no guidance. Don't know how to set expectations if I don't know. ice breaker ideas? I'm not in my classroom.. media center.
Tonight I billed a thousand an hour to literally play word processor for some partner who could not POSSIBLY go on imanage themselves despite this being an “emergency”. I’m not sure whether I love or hate this job. Bit of both. Easiest couple of hours I billed today. (Note, I am nowhere close to junior. The junior is fantastic and busy doing other things so I didn’t ask them.)
