Is it a true downleveling, or just the title sounding like its a step down? Director at some companies can be individual contributors, at others like Google it is a very senior level. You should compare how many steps you are from the c suite, how big the team size reporting to you is, decision making power, etc
If its simply the new title sounding more junior, then personally it would annoy me but I wouldn’t require much if all else is great. If you are going from having 10+ people under you to having just 3 people, so it is truly a step down in responsibilities, then i would only take the opportunity if 1) massive (20/30%+) increase in Tc, 2) better prestige with the firm brand, and 3) better expected exit ops
S&1 would you need all of those factors or would any one of them be enough.
It seems like a true down leveling in the short run and lateral in the long run. Currently leading a larger team, this would be starting a new team from scratch starting with “a few” reports and growing into them, and back into an equivalent title, as more directs and skip levels are approved.
Taking a lower title and higher pay is the ideal outcome… less responsibility and more money
Responsibilities overall won’t change but the scale of it will change until a team is built up. More focus on tactical execution than team leadership in the short run.
I did this for a 40% increase in base and 55% increase in TC. Zero regrets
