My view: consulting is going to give you the variety of work and opportunities that get you further in your career, quicker - as you put it, growing heaps.
Make it work for you, and when you’re done - then start exploring industry or vendors.
Different parts of consulting (and indeed, EY) are growing at different rates, so this might depend on your background, team and skill set.
Made the switch to industry after 7 years into a sector I’m interested in. Only when you’re surrounded with people who don’t have that background and toolkit (note, they might have really valuable other skills of course), then you see your value add.
What area of consulting are you in? If you’re considering Director and Partner track, specialisation in scalable services (e.g Salesforce implementations, Supply Chain Analytics) could also be a way to go. That doesn’t mean you’re stuck to the partner track, you can then go (and start your own) boutique that specialises in this field. If money is on your mind, this could easily be a lot higher than an industry wage.
I see a lot of consultants get into trouble though when they don’t have a goal and get thrown, especially in Big 4, on random PMO and review jobs pushing out status updates whilst people with sector and technical knowledge get to make the decisions..
At 4 years you should have a good view (or are developing one) which path you want to take. That doesn’t mean you have to have the exact industry or specialisation covered, but consider what suits you best.
Good luck and you’re in a great position!
No real advantage in terms of big 4 consulting vs industry. There is advantage in terms of career acceleration, learning, MBA support, travel etc at strategy consulting firms (MBB and T2s).
