What sort of books do you remember the most from when you were in school? Was it the stories that resonated with you or the assignments/lessons around it?

The stories resonated the most. Siddartha, Metamorphosis, and Death of a Salesman impacted me greatly my senior year of high school.

All of my favorite texts, every single one, are the ones I read with teachers who were excited to read them and made it seem fun. 😁 And also anything in my 5th grade science book because I really liked the layout and colors in that particular textbook. 😂

Gulliver's Travels, Brave New World, & 1984. I didn't realize at the time I read them that GT had a profound impact on Huxley and Orwell. I got to teach the latter two for nearly 20 years, lucky me, but taught GT just once. All three are now more relevant than ever.

You just finished teaching a skill / topic in your lesson. Children are now off to work on that skill independently: who are you targeting first to support, your students in the red or your students in the yellow?

Hey fellow Disney Lovers,

I generally have a few lessons in which I can use Pixar shorts to teach students how to identify and discuss literary signposts, how to identify and explain the development of theme, character traits, and other narrative elements. What are some of your favorite shorts? I am trying to incorporate activities where my students get to choose their own clips for independent practice with these skills and need a variety to draw from.

I got an email last night from a 7th-grade parent because her son said I mentioned the words "male privilege" in class, and she is very concerned about how that is related to ELA (she said "reading"), and she is concerned about this being taught in public schools. To be clear, I didn't do a lesson on this subject but we did discuss rights versus privileges. I've had multiple parents contact the school/get upset with me because of things like his. It's exhausting... Thoughts?
