I mean, both matter. But which is *more* imperative depends upon the topic.
For example: if I have my students writing a persuasive research essay, detail is more important. They're not going to write another such essay the next day, so it's not imperative that they have feedback on how to improve right away... as long as they get quality feedback before the next time they need the skill.
But for, say, a math class where each concept builds on the previous one, it's different. In that scenario, they need to know quickly what they got wrong, so they can find a way to correct it before moving on to the next topic in class.
What you have to ask yourself is, "When is the next time I will be asking them to use this same set of skills?" And then you need to provide the best feedback that you can within that time window.
Thanks for your input! I read somewhere that essays should be returned to students within 24 to 48 hours. Sounds impossible to me!
Timely for formative building towards summative. Detailed for summative on which to reflect and plan how to improve for next time. I’m thinking about writing here…
I would say around the length of time it took for them to write the essay. If it took them a week to put it together, taking a week makes sense.
Both. Alternate, based on the assignment.
Both! But If I were to choose only one, I'd choose the former. It is always better to have timely feedback so I'd know what am I lacking or need to improve in real-time.
