Ahh, that wouldn't work dealing with any hiring managers I know. I would interupt you and tell you, "this is our best offer take it or leave it," and 99% tgey would take it.
Learn to be comfortable and knowing your worth. Negotiation is about leverage and confidence. If you have little and no confidence you will lose. Learn those skills.
Do some research ahead of time so you have something to back up what you're saying (and also know how hard to push). Look at ranges for similar jobs, look at where they've placed you in their advertised range (don't expect the top end - be realistic), consider whether there are factors that you bring above and beyond the basic qualifications, etc. Basically, build a case you belive in and it will be a lot easier.
I would recommend sending the initial negotiation in email after you get an offer. That lets you lay out your case a little better without getting interrupted midstream :) do offer up a call to discuss though.
Have a counter offer or make up a counter offer. That's the oldest way to get traction - show that you are in demand.
