What coding / technical chops do you have? At least at Google, PMs have to be technically fluent - strategy folks sit in a BizOps or General S&O function, and aren’t brought in as PMs without technical literacy.
Depends on the company and team. Based on what I’ve heard from friends, companies like google and fb like to see technical PMs. Whereas other companies might hire more functional folks. I’ve seen people get around this by going to a startup for a couple of years then jumping over to FAANG.
You don't need to know how to code but learn how system design ACTUALLY works. I recommend interviewbit. If you can actually describe how components of software really works, I bet you'd be a shoe in.
Yeah I know folks from HBS / Wharton who are PMs at Facebook; they haven’t coded a lick and don’t plan to 😉
Bump
Also looking to shift to a Product Manager role at FAANG here. Have about 2 years of experience with Agile Technology implementations and have MS in CS so very technically adept.
Only issue is my project work is with ERP systems and wondering if my duration and nature of experience is good enough for the leap
Start at SAP or workday and then shift again
