If you’re buying it to get attention, then never. If you’re passionate about watches then whenever you feel like throwing that money away wouldn’t impact your life. A good majority of people that own Rolex’s can’t name 4 luxury watches brands and bought it simply because of the marketing.
There’s a lot of great stuff in your price range that would be less recognizable to your every day person but exceed the craftsmanship and movement you’d find the the comparably priced Rolex
You may need to wait 6-12 months to buy a Rolex in that price range given how little inventory is available right now.
A fair number of people get Rolex’s as milestone gifts (graduation, wedding, birthday, etc) or passed down from family. I’ve seen an audit first year wear a bluesy every day and no one give it a second look. There are definitely a lot more luxury watches in advisory but the only people that have ever commented on mine have had an interest in watches. There’s a luxury watch bowl on here if you want advice from more passionate people
A Rolex subc is basically the first watch those that are new money buy and it’s tacky because that’s the only nice watch they can think of. ie basically everyone working oil rigs, coal mines and your pizza delivery guy has one..
There are so many other nice brands that have character and class. Try to see if one speaks to you, instead of buying just a shiny Rolex because it’s a Rolex. If you must wear a rolex, go vintage. Maybe something that matches your birth year…
boom - nailed it
Rolexes are always tacky
Lots of wealthy people have a Rolex. They are durable, high quality watches. Unfortunately these days everyone seems to be engaged in one giant social media flex off which furthers the stigma
The luxury watch bowl would probably make some of your heads explode…
As a long term watch guy, I would say there’s generally no negative association to wearing a Rolex, at least in public accounting. A substantial percentage of the male partners are watch enthusiasts, or at least wear a nice watch. Almost invariably a Rolex, though I’ve seen IWC, Panerai, Hublot, Breitling, Zenith, and Apple watches among others. That said, I think a staff or senior with a sub would seem a little try hard. Certainly a Tutor or Omega or something along those lines would be fine. Also, no gold or two tone until you make partner or managing director.
The benefits of wearing a nice watch are substantial. As I mentioned, a lot of the partners are watch guys. I think it also serves as a bit of a confidence booster as well. Also can’t hurt when you’re sitting at a bar chatting up a cute associate. You do need to be a little careful how you come across to clients (though I’ve bonded with many client execs who are also watch guys).
The batman/batgirl being labeled gaudy as hell 😂😂 what a world
Never, I wore a SS Sub as an intern 😎😎😎
Whenever you can comfortably buy it with no regret or other sacrifice. Some think it’s tacky. Some gaudy. Some people view it as a lifetime achievement.
Do whatever makes you happy and what you can responsibly afford!
Never.
The clock on my phone is all I need….
I think a rolex looks nice. I’d say it’s just when you can comfortably afford it. My guess in that would be around 200k in a mcol city
One could easily afford it before that point, provided they don’t have any large debt outstanding.
When you move past the part where you’re worrying about what other people think is tacky.
Rising Star
If you’re asking this question; the answer is always. Lots of really high quality, very cool watches in those ranges
At some firms you get one as a gift for making partner. Maybe then
Tudor still too much?
I have a bb58. Most people have no idea what it is. One person wearing a sub thought it was a Rolex. Anyone else who has commented has had their own collection
180k?
