Hard work makes a lucky break more likely.
Most people who succeed worked “hard enough” and focused on the political / bureaucratic side of corporate life to see success.
My tip: when you are taking on a project, determine whether or not the input is worth the output. There are some activities that will deplete 99% of your energy and contribute 1% to advancement opportunities, and there are other activities that will take 1% of your energy and get you in front of the right audience to be successful in a relatively short amount of time.
Be known as a hard worker, but choose when you work hard very wisely.
Great advice. Thanks for sharing
….which may be very hard to directly influence with hard work. E.g., choice of career, manager, culture, economy etc.
Long timers - how much of what I am saying is true? Or am I avoiding taking responsibilities for my failures?
100% right. In middle management and left consulting at pre partner level. Consulting made you believe hard work + performance = progression. You then start to realize it’s not the main part of the equation as you get more senior/tenured.
In hindsight, I wish I stayed put in firms where it was good and I had a strong network/momentum. The grass is greener got to me
I like the concept of “luck surface area.” You expand your surface area through hard work. Meaning luck won’t hit you unless you give it every possible opportunity to do so.
Heard about it from an influencer named Sahil Bloom lol
I’ve always liked what Louis Pasteur said, “Chance favors the prepared mind.”
You are 100% correct...but keep on working hard...you never know when that opportunity that will drive you 10 steps ahead will arise

You cracked the code. Three parts “how talented and politically powerful is my boss”, five parts “how politically talented is my boss’s boss”, one part my skills, and one part chance. Play the odds.
1) Be likable
2) Get on the right team with the right leader to vouch for you
3) Be really good
Foolproof method
There was a study that showed salary ceiling and professional progress/growth was more associated with your specific industry’s performance and individual firm profitability. I saw this nearly 10 years ago. I’ll have to dig it up. So I think you’re right, hard work < luck, but perhaps good judgment on industry selection helps make your luck
I think a lot of people don’t want to acknowledge how much of a role luck played (as it was all their own hard work and brilliance right?). The reality though is that especially for the absolute top end of jobs/pay scale luck plays a huge role (and often a very different set of capabilities, resulting in a lot of people in very senior jobs who might be very mediocre in a lot of things but are amazing networkers, sales people, self marketers etc)
Ok sir I m ready , for this interview orI m hard working person ,
I am convinced “no one truly knows what they are doing”
Everyone is trying and pretending their best.
Not saying people are not working hard but it is absolutely right time right place that is real truth.
This has given me enough reason to not doubt that there’s a chance that I might end up in one of those C level role - so let’s go
As long as you’re competent in your job, it’s who likes you. Full stop.
Eventually it will be about money, success, who you know and confidence. Get a solid network
Yup. Learned this the hard way. 15 years into my career now.
In my view, luck is very important in the short term, but evens out over the course of the career. I think there are other factors beyond luck and hard work though. If I look at the people that are successful around me (firm and clients) I think the most important factor is skills/aptitude. Then a good match between your skills and what you are trying to do. Then hard work - for consulting long term success those are the table stakes. People who work hard but aren't really great at what they do will ceiling. People are very skilled, but don't want to put in the effort will ceiling. Luck will come since people can see talented hard working people and eventually people offer them jobs / roles. My view after 26 yoe.
I'll say this. If people can find more than 200 software developers for every one of your career and you are in tech you have a much higher chance of doing well just by virtue of the math.
