When or if recession hits, are there gonna be crazy layoffs within consulting? Are there consulting groups that may withstand it without layoffs?

Yes, recession is coming.
Yes, it's going to last more than a year.
Inflation is not going to come back down any time soon.
People assuming that interest rate hikes will lower inflation like they did in the past are wrong.
So,
get on a long term project where you can be valuable.

Or join a product / tech platform company that’s so integral to the clients operating tech that the perpetual revenue source makes them a survivor!!

I think pharma and healthcare generally weather downturns better than other industries. Ops work tends to fare better than corporate strategy, which is seen as more optional. M&A and CDD groups are vulnerable as deals dry up quickly.

A lot of defaul-dead startups will be hurting but employment is so high right now with a labor shortage it probably won’t be anywhere near a shock like ‘08

Yes some companies will have layoffs

In the worst recessions recently in developed countries unemployment has risen by 10 percentage points or so - the odds are not too bad. Layoffs in large consulting firms are unusual (none I’m aware of since dot com bubble burst) but up or out tends to shift more towards out and recruiting slows sharply.

Real question: with all the scared people(myself included) in audit and tax with layoffs is advisory the only industry safe? Maybe specifically technology advisory as tech seems to not be slowing down

So I've had 2 hiring managers and several recruiters from Amazon reach out to me about applying for some open positions with the company (android). I completed the coding assessment and now they want me to go through a round of 5 hour interviews next week. Is there a good chance I'll be hired if engineering managers are reaching out to me? I'm really not sure how badly I want to work for them and I don't want to be laid off months after being hired on. Anyone know what Amazon hiring is like?

Should I renege offer from MBB?

An MBA recent grad. I signed with MBB last year. However, I have always wanted to do tech PM. I couldn’t find PM job in Fall and just signed MBB offer I have. I recently got an FAANG offer. It’s PM function, hard to break in with consulting experience. I declined the new offer during interview stage and again after they gave me initial offer, but it is coming back with 80k more in annual compensation. It made me so torn!! Should I renege MBB offer?

6 months pregnant and just laid off. And 40% of my severance was just taken in taxes .. I just spoke with paid family leave and I no longer qualify even though I had been paying into the program (thanks NY).. I already applied for unemployment but doctors are telling me I’ve got 10-14 weeks left in this pregnancy.. so stressed having twins and being unemployed, no maternity leave, no paychecks coming in, and I’ve been applying but not a single interview.. just ugh. 😭

The week of my wedding, my husband (PL SQL Developer 4 yoe) was laid off. That was a couple of weeks ago. Luckily I'm still bringing money in as a software engineer, but I'm looking for advice on how to support a partner who has been laid off. Ultimately I think we will be ok, but I know he's hurting / stressed / and could use a supportive partner.

If you are fired at the end of a PIP (ie 30 day performance plan) what is the most common practice for severance? I know companies are not entitled to give you anything and especially if it’s a firing not a layoff.

Feeling so down right now…I spent months trying to get into a tech company. And when I finally got in, I was then laid off two months into the job. This past month, I applied to 300+ jobs and had 30+ interviews. None of them led to offers due to hiring freezes or internal hires. I just went through 10 interviews with a non-tech company and I don’t know if I will get an offer. I am just so tired of everything. If anyone knows of any PM roles (hardware/software), please let me know. YOE: 2

I am not sure what to do. My company just had another round of massive layoffs. So far my job was spared. I do got a job offer from a different company but the salary is way lower than what I have now (20,000$ less). Should I choose for financially stability but with a lower salary, or take the risk, keep the higher salary, but have a high chance to loose it as the company isn’t doing great.

I’ve been on the bench with J1 for about 3 months. I was worried that because I couldn’t find another project, I would get laid off so I found J2, which pays more, is very meeting heavy, but I really like. I’ve kept J1 because I’m still on the bench doing absolutely nothing and getting paid. Thinking about looking for a role on a project with J1 that’s not along my career path but will allow for me to do work with no calls so that I can manage both jobs. Does anyone have experience or advice?
