When you're on vacation, do you fully unplug or still find yourself checking in on work now and then? I’ll admit - I used to be really bad at disconnecting. I’d check emails constantly and even jump on calls if my team needed me. Lately, I’ve been making a real effort to set boundaries and truly switch off. Still, there’s a part of me that feels a little guilty for not checking in at all. Curious how others manage that balance - do you unplug completely, or do you find a middle ground?

I have to fully unplug, otherwise I won’t be able to completely relax. I don’t often take long spurts of PTO, though.

Curious how long do you typically take PTO?

I think it's an issue of perspective and mindset. Would you expect your manager to constantly keep dropping things during their vacation time with family that they have earned in order to keep helping you with problems? So why do you expect other people to have that kind of access to you and your time? Like all things, boundaries are skills that need to be practiced. My suggestion would be to only check your work email for 10 minutes a day, and then five minutes a day, and then not at all. For me, stopping things cold turkey even if they are good for me is very stressful, but weaning myself off really helps. That's what I did on my most recent trip: I started out by checking very occasionally and then by the end of the trip, I was forgetting to check at all. You have earned your vacation and you should enjoy it!

That’s such a helpful way to think about it - especially the part about boundaries being a skill. I like the idea of easing out of the habit rather than going cold turkey. Definitely going to try the “weaning off” approach on my next trip!

I used to check in constantly because I thought it showed commitment and I wanted to climb the ladder so badly. But over time, I realized it just made everyone not respect my PTO and did nothing to help me get an actual break. Now I set an out-of-office, delegate to my team clearly, and log out for real. The guilt’s real at first, but stepping away actually makes me much better when I return.

Totally relate to that! setting boundaries felt uncomfortable at first, but you’re right, it really does help in the long run. Love the reminder that true rest makes us better when we’re back!

I switch off completely. We're not saving lives here. Time with my family is what is truly important and I've given them ample time to prepare for me being out. You're always going to be replaceable at work but you're irreplaceable when it comes your family.

That’s such a powerful reminder. Work can wait while family can’t!

Fully unplug! We all work so hard to have time off and have luxuries like holidays. So we should be able to fully enjoy them and not even think of work!

Yes! Time off should actually feel like time off! We’ve earned it, and being able to fully enjoy it makes such a difference.

I just started a new job 2 months ago, benefits and PTO don’t start until 90 days in so I still have a month before I can take off any time, and today found out my company doesn’t offer paid maternity leave.
I’m really struggling handling the symptoms and maintaining my full time job. Thinking about looking for a part time job to have more time to myself through the pregnancy since I won’t be getting a paid leave anyways, but lost on where to start looking. Any recommendations?

Discussion: comparing base and bonus numbers at any level feels like a lack of imagination. Why don't people ask for truly differentiated things? Ie. I want to have 5 extra PTO days, I need a car, pay my healthcare, etc.

How do I divide the chores in this case? I’m the breadwinner - husband has been taking time off from work. No kids. Two dogs.

I feel like I do more chores because there are some things that I just can’t stand. Like dishes left in the sink, dirty floor, dirty dogs, laundry…etc. When I ask him to do those chores, he says he will do them later but he takes forever. So I do them instead. He does grocery shopping, yard work, some cooking. Is it unfair if I repeatedly ask him to do more? 😡😡

Anyone living close to an office, got a holiday party with food and drinks, and the venue started open for them until around midnight. Our remote workers got a one hour party w a DJ and trivia that let you win gift cards. Yeah it was nice to win a gift card but I found it lame in comparison to hanging out with my team in real life.

Career wise - what would be best? A change management role at Crowe working government software upgrades Or Change Management role at a name brand childcare company? The culture fit at childcare company is amazing.. remote, unlimited PTO Crowe , I'm not sure since it's working with government.
