FPA is, rightfully so in most people’s eyes, a back office role. Your “clients” are your business partners (i.e. the managers of business units/p&l’s/etc), and you have virtually no end-user facing activities. The position exists to help the business(s) make decisions, plan, manage their financials/people/resources, and provide insights and analysis into their performance.
Businesses that understand this value will pay higher salaries. In my experience, people-heavy businesses with high margin products fit this description. Contrary to VP1, my experience is that tech > finance. The BO salary ranges at my current tech employer are notably higher than salaries offered for the same level positions at banks and funds.
Tech is the lowest.
Most is probably PE, and fp&a is naturally a MO function no matter where you're working, lol.
