Having spent the last 4 years in banking there was constant RIFs, no joke probably half of who I worked directly in my time across 3 teams has since been purged. Banks are compressing aggressively
Heathcare tech is pretty stable as long as you dont go into the big companies.
Tbh I’d like an answer for this too, my next hope is banking even though it’s not something I particularly enjoy, it’s infrastructure that’s needed and it uses tech for that application, so I think even though banks have RIFs frequently, it’s a better bet than a pure tech company.
Which is very sad. 😔
I've been laid off multiple times in my career with anywhere from over 6 months notice to no notice. I've also had retention bonuses.
I consider this normal in tech and just plan for it.
It’s normal in tech to be laid off.
The issue now is the job market is absolute shit. The worst I’ve seen in decades. And if you are older it’s even worse because age discrimination is rampant.
40% of American workers experience a layoff in their career. Definitely possible and I think at this point it’s worth always networking and having a Plan B if needed.
40% is high. I had no idea.
I would not go into Tech right now. I would have gone into a trade like Plumbing, Electrician, or Construction
Yes , working with your hands is more rewarding then technology. In Tech you develop it , then support it, then constantly have to make changes to it. And it is the same program on your desk for 10 years. In a trade you go to a new place more often and interact with humans. You will not be replaced by AI, there is a possibility of joining a Union or being your own Boss
Well, I’m upskilling my ass off “AI-knowledge-wise”! But you are not wrong!
Since COVID hit (which was a disaster for me because I was independent at the time), I’ve had 3 employers. Each has brought me on to lead major initiatives! Each has laid me off as part of group layoffs when the projects were finished!
I’m broke now because of it all. Gotta sell my house in the next 3 months to survive!
PS - each company hired me as FTP. These were not contracts!
Overemployed - get 2 or more remote jobs.
