Why would a public school district ask me to fill out a credit report for a teaching job? I'm not handling money or merchandise. I've been in the same job for 10 years and lived in the same house for 15! It felt so intrusive. I refused to sign the release for the credit report, even though I was fine with a criminal background check. I just don't understand it. Has this happened to anyone else?

No. I can't imagine why they would need that information

I’d think not hiring for a bad credit score would be discriminatory…

Could you ask the reason behind it? Sounds odd..

Be it right or wrong, it is frequently used as a proxy gauge for personal discipline and responsible behaviour.

As teachers, we don’t typically deal with money in a direct way, so it feels unnecessary. However, some districts are just extra cautious and have a policy that includes credit reports for all employees, especially for certain roles. I’ve seen it happen, though, and some districts just think it’s a part of ensuring overall trustworthiness.

like

I don’t know why, it does sound odd. Maybe the school’s thinking is that desperate people who are short in money make desperate decisions. You don’t have to deal with money, However a credit reports tells a lot to an hiring manager about a candidate. It is fair to ask the person who’s requesting it why they are asking instead of outright refuse, in that case withdraw from your candidacy.

Good credit scores show employers you are mature and responsible. If you have a low score because of something like divorce, I would hope that the employer would ask about it and consider all factors before ruling out a potential candidate. I would look into it further before signing.

It might be a good idea for some ppl- we had an elementary principal who embezzled money. New secretary came in and busted the principal. District fired said principal but did not press charges 😡

Was it credit as in money or credit as in college credit to see what you would be available to teach?

Associate at an AmLaw 100 firm doing patent work. I applied to a part time masters program to try to pivot to a different technical field (still doing patent work, but in something that interests me more than what I’m doing now). Do I try to stick it out at the firm while getting the masters, ask for a reduced hours schedule, or get a part time, non-legal job so I can focus more on the program (one year).
