Will you take 30% pay cut to allow permanent remote if your current job is 5 days in office

I recently went through something similar and I used chatGPT to help me determine if it was the right move. I asked it to calculate the average cost of commuting (gas, tolls, car maintenance, coffee, lunches, etc) over a year to see how much of my salary was going towards commuting. I gave it my current salary, expected salary. I compared benefits. And got a complete picture of the differences. I ultimately chose to leave. I’ve been at my remote job for a month and it was definitely the right move for me. If you can afford it and it makes sense for your lifestyle/career aspirations, I would seriously consider it. I do not, for even one minute, miss being in the office.

Don't forget that you might be dropped to a lower tax bracket.

Will they give pay increases to those who go five times a week?

like

of course not

like

I think maybe 15%. 30% would be a bit much unless you're earning 500k, then the lifestyle hit shouldn't be too bad. You can also make it up if you're willing to move from HCOL to LCOL, then it makes sense

like

I'm with you SSM1. I've been remote for 13 years now and lead a globally dispersed team. Being remote has allowed me to move to a much warmer and more enjoyable climate, has improved my social life after work and has generally improved my life.
That said, I doubt I'd take a 30% cut. I didn't take any cut when I moved from office-based to remote.

like

30% pay cut for social isolation? Lots of benefits with remote work, but also LOTS of drawbacks. Signing up for that and 30% pay reduction? No thanks.

likefunnysmart

oh please can i go back to a cube farm where I have to listen to people cough, move, sneeze, let alone their personal conversations/fights with their family all while sitting in teams meetings all day b/c one person is not onsite..... no thanks!

like

I’d take a 30% raise for 5 days a week in office :)

likeupliftingfunny

you see, thats not going to happen. they call you back and expect you to pay for all commuting cost and then lost time for no gain on your end. however, if you want to stay fully remote, places like dell won't ever promote you.

like

Be mindful that it isn't a 1 time pay cut. Any COLA or promotions will be based on that lower salary, and you'll be stuck for as long as you work there. 5% of nothing is nothing.

When you do the math, make sure you're looking 5-10 years ahead.

If you make 150k now, manage to squeeze 3% cola and two 10% raises, it'll take you almost 9 years to get back to that 150.

like

Very good point. Also, less into 401K if the employee has opted to contribute.

like

Funny how they want you to take a pay cut when their expenses are way less without physical offices.

like

You shouldn’t have to. There’s no research proving in person work is more efficient than remote. The company can save on building expenses too. That should be enough. On the flip side if they made me go in I would expect more compensation as they’re taking more hours of my day for commutes, preparation etc.

likesmart

Not a chance. Especially since my current job pays for my commute and I’m a meal prepper so the cost isn’t much different. Maybe in 10 years I’d be willing to step back in pay but I want to save as much as possible now.

like

Okay. I am seeing responses on both the sides. I may opt for paycut since it will allow me to spend more time with my child and have flexibility

like

i would because you only have one chance to spend time with your kid when they're young. once those years pass, its over so make the most of that instead of focusing on money.

like

By the same token, I might consider a 30% pay raise if they mandate RTO 5 days a week.

like

Why would I ever take a pay cut to work remotely? A zoom package is cheaper than renting an office downtown. Remote work is saving companies money. Don't let any corporation fool you - remote has proven to increase productivity and save on costs. I would never accept a pay cut for that.

like

obviously the pay cut is to try and force you back in

like

A 30% pay cut just for the ability to work remotely, while the workload remains unchanged, seems exploitative :-).

Employers save money on office space, utilities, and other overhead costs when employees work remotely, so there’s no real justification for such a drastic salary reduction.

Find a new job my advice

likesmart

Weird. I’d expect a pay increase for full time remote as the company would be saving on real estate costs. For 20% or more of an increase I’d accept full time WFH

like

No, plenty of high paying remote jobs out there, esp with start ups

like

Yep! There's more to life than money & work. Also salaries in todays market (unless you're earning 6 figures or sumn) are not enough to survive from.

like

Honestly, no. If they can give insanely good reasons as to why your salary has to drop 30% for being remote, I’d be looking at other jobs.

like

Not the first time I have heard the argument of the social aspect. Not all people have the personality that makes a workplace a social one. I have worked most od my career going into the office and still end up socially isolated. I would go to my office and focus on my work. I know it is my choices that drive that. When I do socialize is meetings which happens whether I work from home and from the office. I can't tell you how many times I have gone into the office and still done a zoom call too. I think it is all based on one's personality.

like

yes people always think that being in the office = social interaction. this is not always the case. you have to actually be around people who are social and you have something in common with. otherwise, you'll talk in a meeting here or there but then sit at your desk by yourself for the rest of the day. You can't control who you work with so it's luck to find people you click with.

Why is there an assumption that working from home is less productive?
