Women in this bowl in their 30s, 40s & beyond, how did the way you're treated at work change as you got older?

I think I'm lucky in this way because I grew into my looks instead of out of them. I honestly believe I'm more attractive at 41 than I was at 25. I'm more confident and so I command more respect than I did then. That being said, men certainly don't flirt with me like they used to when I was in my twenties or even early thirties.

I would agree with PO - I don't think it's necessarily directly age that affects how I'm treated at work but I'm certainly far more confident of myself at my age than 10 years ago. I also do look younger than my age (maybe late 20s).

like

I agree that it's less about how I'm treated and more about how I show up with more understanding of what I bring to the table. I remember hearing (when i was in my 20s) that the best sex, relationships, and overall gratification in the workplace all happened past the 40s. So far, they're right about all of it. (:

They treated me just the same except for new hires of course. I never impose my age nor demand a specific amount of respect because of it. I get the respect I deserve because I do the same for my co-workers.

You have the right to answer vaguely, dodge, or even declare flatly, "I'm not comfortable answering that question right now."

To me, this appears to be acceptable. People will definitely ask if you appear young to them.

Frankly, I believe it's impolite. I suppose it is a method for others to criticize or disregard you depending on how young or old you are.

Normally, the question is good on its own, but I believe there are times when the manner in which they ask you comes off as judgmental.

Maybe just repond with "How old are you?" and smile. It's not an appropriate question, and flipping it around will either make them realize it or force them to ask again if they truly want to know.

I think that age matters in the way we are treated. As we get experience we are more confident in ourselves and our skills. Of course no matter how experienced you are, you can still have the imposter syndrome.
But in a junior position, you are a lot more vulnerable. Men tend to take advantage of this.
For me it definitely changed.
I had men trying to kiss me in company night outs, tell me in appropriate things or received inappropriate emails. But that hasn’t happened now that I am in my 30s and I think it’s because of confidence and the security of having a senior position.

I had an old boss join my company recently. They weren’t my direct report at my old company, but was my manager’s manager. Well, my new boss took me aside for a meeting and stated “there’s a negative perception going around about you”. She stated that her, my old boss and another member of current leadership were talking about the way I speak. She then says that my former boss told them that I wasn’t energetic enough in my last role. How should k handle this? My boss is agreeing with her

I recently took a job with a top tier investment manager, which is a step up in title and responsibilities. I went through the typical “notice” conversations with my current employer. My boss, who was a significant supporter and mentor of me during my time at my current firm, told me that he doesn’t think my new firm is “long term” for me. Anyone ever get something like this before? It threw me off because I was hoping for his support, understanding that it’s tough for him temporarily

How to ask for a raise when you have more responsibility ?
Is it normal for people to ask for a raise when more responsibility/task fall under them? My company is going through separation and unfortunately my team is the one getting separated, I have to take on responsibility of another 3 people and continue to deliver the same after separation… how will you start this conversation with your manager ? Thanks in advance.

Since you all are wise, I have a question, not really a confession though…but I will add a confession at the end..

If you submit to a specific role at a large company and they reject you for the role you applied, would you still be on file if there are other roles that are a match? Or, do you have to apply to each role? I am thinking it is the latter.

Confession question…how often do you stalk exes or people you used to work with? Like someone will come to mind and I will immediately (cont)

This woman really doesn't want anyone sitting next to her. Is there an equivalent of manspreading?

I’m new to the firm. My third project my manager was very hands off. He’s wants to have a discussion with me about my performance. He did not give me any support to work with; even when I asked! And my direct manager agrees with him, but it was my third week. What to do? I feel like I’m going to say something crazy. Any advice?

Senior manager wants everyone to share our screen with him for the day so he can monitor what everybody is doing. I personally thing this is ridiculous. Can I ask him send this request in writing?

Been for a company for over 2years. The executive team is very much a boy's club. There are a few women in management roles but zero ethnicity diversity there. I raised my concern to HR in feb. And they are just now deciding to do something about it. They want me (white female) to put together a diversity committee. Any suggestions on how to go about it? How to attract volunteers to the committee? I want to make sure I get the right people involved in this, to push for changes.

How did you give notice you were lateraling to people you like? Particularly if you haven't been there that long?

I'm lateraling to another firm because frankly I think the management of this one is terrible, but the people (and individual partners) I actually work with are awesome. I've only been here for about 18 months, so I imagine that short time frame will make it extra awkward 😬

I'm a cashier. We just got a new manager, and she's making things really hard for us. She starts work at 4:30am and leaves around 2:30pm, but she still expects us to stay until 6pm and work on the weekends! She gives us really long shifts and doesn't give us much time for breaks. And when we ask her about it, she gets mad.

I'm worried that if I speak up, she'll make my life even harder. I don't want to lose my job because of this—do you guys have any advice?

Anyone know anything about a vendor called Remesh? BSO or legit?

I'm a first yr attorney at an insurance firm and am in the process of interviewing for an in-house position at a tech company. The position is pretty much generalist, but I get the impression I'd be working mostly on SaaS and partnership transactions. I definitely think I would like the transactional work better, but I am concerned about the long-term earning potential vs. partnership. How common is it to eventually make $400k+ in-house/how difficult is it to transition back to a firm? Thanks!
