Work life balance question - would you accept a lower salary, for a guarantee of work/life balance? If so, what is your definition of balance (total hr requirement, avg hrs/wk, etc)?

Recently left PA for a job where I work 40 hours a week, never even think about turning my computer on during the weekends, leave work between 4&4:30 everyday. I have the ability to work from if I want to, but I don’t feel the need because I have a 15 minute commute. I got a pay increase when I left, but I took less money and there is less career advancement than other positions that I interviewed for. The reason I went with this position is that I feel like I have a life back.

Many people wouldn’t go the route I did, but am fine with the money I make and slightly less career advancement. I do think I found a company that I can retire from though (in 30 years)

Max 40 hours a week, no weekends= work life balance

I am in Tax and I am I think I’m lucky but I am really happy with the flexibility my group allows. I work from home 1-2x a week with little-to-no advanced notice. My partner sets the tone and does the same. She has never questioned me working from home and I was a Tier 1 in my first year (18 months in now). I am undoubtedly more productive at home. I work more efficiently and for longer (without noticing) when I’m at home. I can workout over lunch, avoid rush hour traffic and can wake up at 8 and be online working at 8:01. I can cook dinner and do laundry while working. This clears my mind and improves efficiency.

I still come in 3-4 days a week to the office but definitely get less done there. My friends want to take an hour lunch and the silly open concept makes it impossible to focus.

I think it works for some people and not for others. I have no distractions at home (no kids, no temptations to watch tv etc).

Without this flexibility I would be looking elsewhere for sure. Can’t say if I’d consider a lower salary.

like

@EY 1 who do you work for?

like

Yes, I would. All depends on what is priority for me at that point of time. Few extra money may not bring as much happiness as spending time with a loved one. Balanced hours would be anywhere between 40-50 hours/week, less than 30 mins commute/day and a flexible arrangement to work from home.

like

I'm not in the business of taking pay cuts.

like

Work from home is a key to it for some jobs for sure. Being able to skip commuting for part of the week is great. And typically means managers arent overbearing.

I would take a pay cut for a work life balance. I would be willing to take a 20% cut as long as I don’t work more than 50hrs per week, do not do weekend work, keep the flexibility of working from home, and keep the same vacation days. As you can see, my pay cut would be to only reduce my hours worked but I would want to keep certain perks from PA. I think it is important to pay attention to how much time off you get at the job. We in PA get 25-30 days off per year so if the new job only offers 15, the difference will
Make a pretty big impact in our work life balance.

Yes, around 40/wk would make it worth a pay cut or stagnant salary/title.

I've basically worked 45 hour weeks, m-f in office year round, constantly since I was a senior plus 10-20 from home at nights plus Saturdays Jan-April and Aug/Sep. It is taking a huge toll on my health, sleep, social life, and the upkeep of our house. I always make time for our kids but basically everything else suffers for all but May/June/October. I actually really like my job, but I need to figure out how to completely stop working from home at nights or find a new job.

EY2: you definitely have a fair point. We all have different goals in life and we should work on achieving them, whatever those goals may be.

Yes I would, and I did for 2 years after my first child was born. I worked 80% with 80% pay
