Contrary to most of the people on this thread I think church attendance/membership is commanded in the Bible. OP, here’s a resource that may help you think through this. Of course this isn’t to say that this person isn’t a Christian or conversely that going to church makes you a Christian, but I personally wouldn’t date someone who wasnt attending church. https://www.9marks.org/article/journalchurch-membership-biblical/

I’m seeing a guy I met online that hasn’t gone to church in a while bc it brought back too many memories of when he was bullied in school. I guess the churches he went to were all very clique-ish and he always felt like an outsider. He watches some online occasionally and his faith does seem to be important to him. So as others have said, get context but it’s not the 4 walls that save your soul, it’s the relationship you have with Jesus.
I think it would be important to understand why and get more context. Could be no problem, could be a big problem. Does he plan to start going again? Does he have other Christian community in his life?
How long is a while? Did they recently move? What has stopped them from going to church? As PM1 said this could be a lot of different situations. Plenty of people who go to church aren’t great Christians so that shouldn’t be the deciding factor, but I think it’s good that you’re thinking through standards such as this one! Stay picky! :)
I have been that guy. Mostly ceased going because I wasn't seeing the churches moving in the power of God in any meaningful sense but being heavy on theology and human interpretation of doctrine on one end or glorified rock concerts on the other. It all comes down to how serious the relationship with God is for him, and that you will have to determine through a more serious conversation.
Going to church doesn’t make you a Christian. However, if you are Christian, you should be seeking community/accountability in some way. Also being a Christian is about loving God and loving others. If you are a lone wolf it’s a bit contradictory. It is absolutely not just about a having a relationship with God by itself.
Going to church makes you as much of a Christian as standing in a garage makes you a car. His lifestyle is a demonstration of his character and should be used to see how equally yoked you two are faith wise.
Yaaaassss I was going to use that same analogy!!
My faith and church family are very important to me, so when I looked to date after my divorce, I knew Christ had to be at the center of my relationship. My now husband was raised in the church and has faith, but was not making church attendance a priority. I let him know that I wanted to attend church as a family, not as a single mom as I did during my marriage. I needed this modeled for my children. He started attending and meeting people and we were married in that church almost 22 years ago. As someone said, you can have a relationship with Jesus without going to church, but you should find that church community, or small group Bible study, or something to keep your faith strong. To be continually fed with God's word and surrounded by Christian friends that will hold you up, celebrate and pray with and for you. Life gets busy and the devil is even busier.
Initial reaction is that Jesus/faith is not a priority for him. But context is definitely important for what his reasoning is behind it. Is he consistently in the Word? Spending time in other gospel community?
Rising Star
I agree. Who is his community? And who is holding him accountable? We can be believe in Jesus but community is key to our faith and sanctification. I’d be asking why he doesn’t to church either …
Objectively speaking, these comments confirm the spectrum and beliefs in Jesus/ Church which creates the division which Jesus never wanted.
Solution: be objective and seek to understand, and pray for them/ love them as Jesus would.
As believers in Christ, we acknowledge the belief that he controls all things (despite freewill); perhaps it’s His will for you to help this individual “get back on track.”
“The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ…. This makes for harmony among the members, so that all the members care for each other. If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are glad.”
1 Corinthians 12:12, 25-26
I would be wary. Get to know him - his character and integrity should be impeccable. And if he is serious and intentional on marriage and to properly lead he needs to be accountable. Accountable to his faith, you, church leadership. Anyone can love Jesus and not be committed to his teaching. Find out where his heart truly lies before giving him yours.
Please stop measuring peoples faith or character based on church attendance. If your really into scripture, there’s an outline of what you could measure….and spoiler alert; church attendance doesn’t make the list.
Yes. Dating is all about learning more about each other. Could be many reasons he does not attend church. Maybe you're the push he needs :)
I’d also like to note that chances are if they were serious about their relationship w God and making it a priority in their dating relationships the phrase “I haven’t been to church in a while” would’ve been followed up with the reason as they likely would’ve known it would raise a flag. If their attitude about it was nonchalant that’s probably not a great sign
I would say no. I am personally against organized religion. I believe that it seeks to exploit you. And I’ve also never found a church where I felt a a part of it. I think be a Christian comes down to John 3:16 and being a good person. If he truly believes the Bible and you think he is a good person. I would say don’t worry about it
I also wouldn’t worry so much about his friends. Jesus choose his circle very carefully. It’s more about his influence on them
Did deeper and see if he is living out his life as Christ compels us.
I would be more concerned if he doesn’t read his bible. It’s not necessary to go to a physical church what’s more important is if he knows the word and how it’s currently being fulfilled today.
