Would you rather have a lower base salary with the chance to earn unlimited bonus or commissions if you hit certain KPIs, or a more stable income with little to no upside? Personally, I’ll take the steady paycheck any day. I like knowing exactly what’s coming in each month - it gives me peace of mind.

Stable income all day. Eventually, you’ll get burned out with sales goals and having to constantly produce and hunt. Been there, done that and burnt out in 5 years. I now have a salaried role with maybe $20k-$40k bonus per year max and I’m happy. I have health insurance and 401k match, vacation days and mental health days, sick days and peace of mind. I don’t miss the hustle culture grind at ALL.

I hear you completely. Stability and peace of mind are priceless, especially when you’ve experienced burnout. Benefits and a steady paycheck make a huge difference in quality of life.

I like unlimited bonuses. I know it's a but more unstable but it can push you to perform and get that extra $$$. The challenge keeps it exciting especially every time you hit the KPIs.

I get that - unlimited bonuses definitely add some excitement and motivation. It’s a bit of a gamble, but hitting those KPIs feels really rewarding!

When I was younger, I'd have leapt at the unlimited potential. Now with two kids at home and a third on the way, I need stability more than anything. I don't need financial stress on top of all the other stress I'm carrying.

That makes perfect sense - priorities definitely shift when you have a family. Stability really becomes the top priority amidst everything else.

Unlimited bonus/commissions all day. I'm a go-getter, so being able to set the bar as high as I want actually motivates me to work harder. I think the challenge would be figuring out the WLB when you know you could be working and earning more all the time $$$

Unlimited bonuses are great fuel for a go-getter! But agreed that balancing work and life is definitely the tricky part when the money’s always there to chase!

Steady paycheck. I do not do well with commission incentives. Too much stress

Personally I would rather have a standard monthly salary. Easier to plan bills etc

I much prefer a steady paycheck to unlimited bonuses or commission. In my younger years I was all about hustling and making as much as I could. Now I much prefer to know how much is going to be coming in each month.

Totally get that! Knowing exactly what’s coming in each month takes a lot of stress off. Hustling is fun when you’re younger, but stability really wins out over time.

Got a 30% salary bump, via an offer for Senior Consultant S&O from Deloitte. Currently underpaid at EY Advisory. I'm MBA and this year is my promotion year at EY for Manager. What to do? Get demoted and move to D? Or counter at EY? Even if EY matches my salary, and promote me to Manager, I will be an EY Manager with a Deloitte SC salary, and probably won't be able to go to D in the future. What do you think? I have built up a good relationship with my Partner and SMs at EY though.
