Rising Star
Yes if you can literally live wherever
Absolutely. Can drastically reduce cost of living by moving out of NYC to make that 180k go much further on a day to day basis.
MD2 - are you saying it's important because the person is expensive and could be looked at as opportunity to be cut?
Pro
I wouldn’t, but NYC is also the only place in the US I consider habitable.
always sour grapes people who can’t make it in New York
No I would take a pay raise and live wherever I want
Chief
Do you want to leave NYC? If you’re staying in the city anyway, I don’t see the point unless the other role has other draws
Chief
If you want to move, this could be a good opportunity to do so (assuming you’re ok with a full time remote environment). 180k in Chicago will definitely go further than 205k in NYC
Chief
Yes—I’d want the freedom more than the 25k.
25k less all the taxes Mondami will take!
I did that in 2020. Totally 100% worth it.
Pro
Never take a pay cut
Why not? There are things in life that matter more than money for many people
Is this an offer for a fully-remote job at $180K? :)
As some others have indicated, the details are important - are they micromanaging the remote workers, and more flexible with in-person workers? Do I need to account for every minute I'm "on the clock"?
If I just need to "get my work done", I'd rather make 10% less and work from home. But I don't want the work environment to become more stressful because my boss doesn't know how to handle remote workers well.
Let's take it a step further. I'd work remote, flexible-schedule 4 hours a day (with full-time benefits) for $90k. I'd work 8p-12p most days, occasionally 1p-5p, and get a lot done. Studies show a most people will get more done in 4 hours than full-time workers get done on 8 hours because they have less stress. Then I'd spend the rest of my day helping people and organizations in my community.
Yes. That is an attractive and exciting opportunity!!
It’s worth it if you are going to move away from the tri-state area.
YES! Health versus wealth
I accepted a down level position for a $50,000 cut. Its remote and program responsibility but no direct reports. And I have time to pick up clients on the side which I wasn’t allowed to do in big4.
As someone who lived in Chicago but worked for NY company I’d like to warn you about tax implications - please research this before deciding. If your home office is NY you will still pay NY taxes.
What do you regularly do in New York that you couldn’t in other US cities? No need for a car, can walk everywhere, Central Park, Bryant Park, sit by the water enjoying the skyline, food, Lincoln Center…
Definitely
totally would
Plenty of Lower Cost of living locations where that money would go way further.
Where i live we bought our 1800 sqft house (less than 20 years old) with a 2 car garage and a 1 car detached garage on about a half an acre for just under 160K. Now less than 10 years in it appraises around 230.
We are 1 - 4 hours from multiple major US cities.
We get access to the big city stuff when we want it but at the small city costs.
Sure I miss visiting with people in the office but zero commute time and the flexibility that remote work brings is wonderful.
I can and have worked in the car why we were in route to vacation as well.
I’ve told my wife many times that it would cost my next employer at least $30k more to make me go in every day.
Yes, honestly I would think about all the money I would be saving from traveling to work 2 days a week and what I'm buying while I'm at work (coffee, energy drinks, lunches, etc) and how I can use that time to build out better habits for myself.
I'm currently in my working out era LOL
Hell yes, especially cause of your comment about starting a family. Can you do it on NYC? of course. but if you want to do it with space and a yard within cost, NYC will be harder to do so.
