Was their deadline today? If it’s just due by Monday morning than still fine IMO - they might be planning on working on Sunday or compensating by working on Christmas Day even if they don’t like their family and celebrate
As a CD, it’s possible that OP may need to review their work and making someone else wait until the weekend to look through your work bc you want to go into vacation mode for a few days isn’t the coolest move.

Id keep it as narrow as possible. Don’t make it about their Instagram story. (That convo can get away from you fast.) Make it about your expectations for their availability, and them not meeting those expectations.
Rising Star
You shouldn’t be checking their social media in the first place. It’s the day before Christmas. Let it go.
FCD1, what exactly about it is terrible? Calling an employee who was meant to be at work and didn’t show? That’s the only advice in that comment, and would be exactly what I would do if someone I worked with was non-responsive during a work day
Lying is the problem here.
If they said they’re working they are responsible for responding. End of story.
Rising Star
Exactly. Don’t bother getting into WHY they aren’t responding. Just focus on the fact that they weren’t doing what was expected.
Wait and see if they meet the deadline. If yes, then let it go. If no, then you can mention the trip.
With remote work… It is possible to meet deadlines away from home…

Lying doesn’t bother me. The main issue though is that your direct report is SO incredibly dumb that they post their whereabouts on social, WHILE lying.
The shear lack of what should be common sense is the real issue. I’d never want anyone that stupid in my group. Especially dealing with clients.
Feel free to take a photo of my comment and send it to them as holiday gift ; )
Agree with first comment. Deception was the intent. I’d comment on one of their vacation posts so they know you know and decide on your next action by their response.
Rising Star
You don’t have an ounce of control over their personal time and space. To comment on social media in a passive aggressive way (and honestly to comment at all) is inappropriate.
My general rule is that I don’t check if they’re online at all times bc I don’t have time to micromanage — but they should absolutely be available and answering during working hours
What they do with their life isn’t really your business if they get their work done, have they done their work?
If yea, then what’s the issue?
If no, that’s def an issue.
Do they absolutely HAVE to respond to emails and slack if they get their work done?
it’s uhhhhhh not quite EOD somewhere 👀😬

Speak to them and address the failure to work. Reaffirm your expectations for what availability and response time look like on a working day. And clarify consequences: this person needs to file the day as PTO, their balance should be down one. If they protest, THEN bring up the social media.

If the post is still up, make sure you screen cap it in case you need to build a case.

Fair point, MC.
One of my coworkers is currently vacationing in Mexico for a few weeks visiting family. He’s working while there, I see posts from him on social all the time. I’m envious of his beach side lunch breaks!
Wait and see if they do the work, a few photos doesn’t mean they have been playing around all day long.
Wow this thread took quite the turn! Today is usually a wash day but sounds like they really advantage of that. I would NEVER say I’m working and then ghost my boss during biz hours 🤦🏻♀️
But let’s give them the benefit of the doubt here. Monday morning follow up on the items they didn’t respond to and ask for an update. Maybe they worked over the holiday? If they don’t have an update, remind them that responsiveness during working hours is important for the team to function and PTO is theirs to take, document and move on.
I assume the due date you gave them includes time for you yo regiew the work. So provided they meet this deadline, you should be OK.
However, as a team member what should be discussed is them saying they’d be working on X day to you and your colleagues and then be non-responsive and take the day off.
They do have to be accountable and communicative to your team, whether that means “I’ll be working on xyz, but won’t be on slack so if it’s urgent plz text” or something of the like.
I’m super surprised no one has asked this yet, but why are you following each other on social media anyway? I think this blurs the work relationship a bit. My report needs to be my report and not my social media friend or follower. If you never saw their online activity, you wouldn’t have ammo to be feeling this way. If it’s a pattern, then it’s time to investigate.
